ToTW Do pop-up ads hurt websites more than they help?

Postby kat82 » 04 Oct 2025, 11:08

Pop-ups ad type are known for increasing sign-ups but also known for annoying users due to their behavior and style. Do you think they’re worth it having them on your website? Personally, I hate them and also can't add them on my site however much they are known to increase sign ups. How about you?

Pop-ups have the potential to increase sign-ups, but they can also be annoying to users, especially when they appear randomly or repeatedly. I’m also not a big fan of those pop-up ads.

But the truth is, the success of pop-ups depends on how they are used. With the right timing, engaging message, and respect for the user, they can have a positive impact without being annoying. Creativity and understanding visitor behavior are key.

It don't have to. Pop up ads monetize webiste and keep it runing. Many sites have pop up ads and still works like faucets or porn sites.

For most sites, Popup ads would destroy the flow of the site. I think the exception, where Popups might be acceptable, is if there is a legitimate (and obvious) cost to running the service you are providing for free. For example, if you had an AI Job Cover letter checker, each check will cost you something. Offering it for free in exchange for a popup seems reasonable.

It can work on porn sites, illegal download sites, faucets but I was mainly referring to mainstream sites.

I'm not a fan of pop ups in general, but as long as they're not excessive, I can tolerate them. Once they start getting excessive, then it just makes me want to take my business elsewhere, so to speak.

I think the best middle ground is an exit-intent pop-up. It only shows up when a visitor is about to leave, so it doesn't interrupt their reading flow. That way, the site owner gets a chance for a sign-up without ruining the user experience right away!

I don't know if pop-up ads hurt, but I don't like them at all. So I keep them away from any of my websites. If I go to a website and an ad pops up as soon as I get there, I usually leave. However, if the pop-up ad appears when I get ready to leave, I'm OK with that.
