Adblockers

Postby CyberFreak » 16 Feb 2016, 21:28

Do you do anything to deter users from using adblockers on your site?

As a user, do you take notice of sites that either ask you nicely to disable adblockers or force you to disable adblockers?

For this site, I turn off AdBlock for obvious reasons.

I think in the immediate term I would be looking to use something like: https://pagefair.com/ rather than simply displaying a "nice" notification to encourage people to stop using Adblock. Longer term: Force Adblock Disable + Premium membership option, similar to: http://www.wired.com/how-wired-is-going ... -blocking/.

I whitelist sites that I either like and use or those that force me to. I do not pay attention to sites that "ask nicely" unfortunately, hence why I think more webmasters should be forcing users to unblock their ads before using their sites.

I hate it when I am blacked from certain content on websites because I am using adblocker, because the moment that I disable it for that site, ads begin to pop up, and lock up my computer for a while. Makes the whole page go slower. Most websites seem to block content if they detect that you are using a n adblocker though.

Personally I do usually go to great lengths to work around blocks. If it is a site that I like, want to support or I make money from then it is fine but otherwise I like to choose if I trust the site and want to allow ads rather than being forced to do anything.

The reason I asked this is because I was thinking about forcing users to disable Adblock for ForumCoin. Some people would probably work around the block (and the probably wouldn't disable it anyway if we didn't have the block) but hopefully it would encourage a few more users to disable Adblock thus increasing revenue which would be beneficial for all of us.

My issue is not that I don't want to support my favorite sites. If it was at no cost or annoyance to me, I would and willingly. But I just prefer not to have dubious ads popping up on my computer, especially those ads that claim you have a virus, and lock your page until you 'pay to get it unlocked.' I don't have time for it.

There have been times when I have gone on websites where it has detected my adblocker extension, and it will come up with a notice, letting me know why and how ads are important to the website being able to go on. They give you the option to turn off your ad blocker or to leave it on, but they don't blackmail you out of getting to their content.

I may sense right away if the site is a spammer or would-be spammer for such prompt or notice. I never dare to disable my adblocker. I gracefully leave that site.

I keep hearing about adblock, but I've never had to deal with this sort of thing at all. I use a Mac and being on Safari, something I notice a lot is the absence of pop ups. I'd actually totally forgotten until I saw this thread. I've well and truly been spoilt. I remember when I was without my laptop last year and I borrowed a friend's HP laptop.....there were so many pop ups I found it extremely distracting.

I only turn adblock off for sites that don't have pop-ups. I don't mind sites displaying ads quietly on the side, but anything that pops up makes me uneasy. Some pop-ups appear fast and I click on them accidentally. It leads me to a malware-infected site and infects my computer. That's why I can't disable adblock on a lot of sites.

I use an extension called Disconnect that makes the site load faster by blocking scripts like AdBlocker. You can control it and block/unblock 4things. For ForumCoin, I have the adblocker part disabled ;)

The reason why I use it is because I monitor my backlinks and they go to weird sites full of ads that freeze my browser.

I have Ad Block turned off. If I end up on a site that becomes obnoxious and doesn't provide enough value to offset it, I just quit going there. I haven't noticed Forum Coin having any popups, did I miss something?

I use adblock on most sites I visit, but I disable it for sites like ForumCoin that I support and want to give more ad revenue. For sites I don't visit regularly, however, I leave it enabled for security reasons.

I find that my google chrome browser is much more equipped to deal with ads on any given website, than firefox is. Firefox will freeze up and crash with script problems and such. I do forumcoin in chrome, and I have no problems with ads at all here.

I don't like being forced to do anything. I will generally just leave the site. Some sites force you to fill out a registration form to continue reading an article. I know I can always find another site that won't require it. Since most information is saturated, it isn't usually too hard to find another.

I guess you can get away with forcing it when you are paying people.

I don't like being forced to do anything either. Usually, I will go elsewhere if the content is being held at ransom? But there are some instances where you can only get the content that you want from that specific website.

I have had this issue too, and I cannot just open any website because of it. I have to go to chrome to open sites that I am not familiar with, otherwise my whole computer usually freezes up for three minutes. It is very frustrating. It has been like this for months now too, with no solution from firefox.
