Sites that don't look trustworthy

Postby thisnthat » 24 Feb 2016, 17:59

I have come across sites that look a bit sketchy before, but after seeing some of the tests on UH, it got me thinking... what exactly is it about a site that it makes it appear untrustworthy to you?

I'll give an example. Someone I know hates sites that are all super dark. He says they look like scam sites when everything is too dark and looks creepy.

What is about certain sites that turns you off?

Your discussion is too general. We couldn't take our side in which particular sites, niches, platform or whatever which seem to be untrustworthy. Is is about money-making site? Is it about product/services review? Is it about technology? Among others.

As long as the site is functional, they pass my first test. In fact when I see one that was obviously very expensive to develop, it has the opposite effect on me. The real test is if they pay and keep paying without me shoving money in their pockets.

I think the latter part of your thinking is smart. I get suspicious when a site is too amateur, and when a website is too polished too. A happy medium usually denotes a site that can be trusted.

Also, websites that try to copy the design and layout of other well known websites should be watched with suspicion, like Probux was with Neobux.

My imression site like usability hub is very clear, it's kind of those survey sites that confirm whether the business idea will be suitable/acceptable to people in general or not? I have no doubts whatsoever about their purpose so far. As far payment is concerned I have yet to hear anyone got paid from them.

Oh, I wasn't questioning that particular site's trustworthiness. I'm just saying, since that is one of the tests, asking of us if different sites look trustworthy or not, what kind of stuff makes you feel that any site is or isn't to be trusted.

Yes, oldbuddy and Dreeklass, I tend to agree. A happy medium puts me more at ease.

I have no idea, I will try it, the thing that turns me off is the staff of the web page. If I find out that something is wrong on that department, then I go to analyse their plan, how would they handle the writers, payments, traffic, programming, all the common things that speak for themselves. And if all that stinks, then I usually leave.

With WordPress it's too easy to set up a modern looking site that is still going to empty your account so I would look beyond the look and feel.

That is a very good question and one that I find is hard for me to answer. I guess it depends on what I plan to do on the site such as shop or just browse through it. If it is a shopping site, I only go to the ones that I am familiar to me and one's that I have used before. If it is just a site that I am browsing or getting information from then I do not pay much attention to the graphics on the page.

Spelling and punctuation are alarm bells for me.

Also if I am instantly hit with a bunch of ads.

My personal pet peeve is to have so many pop-ups that I can't read the article.

I want to elaborate on what I meant in my previous post, when I mentioned websites that copy the design of other websites. Probux, for instance, mimicked the layout of Neobux, in order to trick people into a feeling of comfort and trust, which eventually leads to investing. The whole time Probux was a scam, so they knew what they were doing picking that design.

Yeah, that would definitely put me off.

That's true. It can look professional and still be a rip off. I'm just curious if certain things are red flags, or if you just get an overall sense or feeling. I have had times where I opened a site and just thought, "nope, something about this isn't right."

If the site said you will earn $5 per referral and you could earn $25 for a simple task in a day, the site is scam to me. You can easily tell because the site might brag paid millions with fake members earning $300+ for a week?

The part that baffles me, is why aren't these scammers put in jail? There must be laws against fraud, why are they unenforced?

I don't think we can judge a site by the way it looks you will only get to know what it is all about when you join that's the best way to find out whether it is a scam or not as for the payments it could be real or a fake.

It only looks easy, trust me there are many things that tell off if a site is solid or set on a thin ice.

Because the fraud and deception are two different things, the first is a thing of a law, the second is not.

For me, it is usually an intuitive feeling. Typos can be another hint. There have been many times that I have landed on some very professional websites, only to spot a typo here and a typo there. I left immediately, especially those websites that were asking for money.

I'm sure a savvy guy like you knows the answers.

I have a few thoughts on the matter.

I'm sure it's not easy to track down these people, and the laws are probably often conflicting between different areas. Proving jurisdiction is probably a big issue. Also, it might not always meet the definition of fraud.
