Alexa Widgets / Buttons Question?

Postby Fergal » 03 Oct 2014, 18:03

I'm considering adding a button to ForumCoin, that would show our Alexa rank. Do you have any suggestions on the best way to do that?

I've seen the options below, but I'm not really sure of them, I'd prefer not use a third party site:

https://alexa.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/arti ... n-my-site-

http://www.myfavoritegadgets.info/servi ... arank.html

Thanks!

Thanks ImmenseFox, you can view the Alexa site at http://www.alexa.com. They provide stats on website traffic and they rank websites from all round the world. They rank Google as the number one site and you can see their rankings at http://www.alexa.com/topsites. You can see how they rank ForumCoin here.

Great rank achieved already Fergal, I think it would be good to show it off.

I think you should ask Brad, the developer of this theme, maybe he can place it in the footer somewhere.

Thanks shamzblueworld, but the issue is not inserting the widget code into the theme. What I'm looking for is the code to insert.

The first link you posted is the official Alexa site (albeit their support portal) so if you don't want to use a third party site, you can use the buttons on the first link.

CyberFreak I hadn't realised that first link was an official Alexa one, so thanks with that, I will try going with that one.

Edit: I've placed an Alexa widget in the site footer, how do you think it looks?

In my opinion, Alexa is not a great thing to show off. It's heavily imbalanced. Webmasters who try to get Alexa by downloading the toolbar get better stats than more active websites.

Additionally, I haven't really seen anyone mentioning Alexa rank anymore. While FC has a great rank, I'm not sure if Alexa is worth the space.

I see it, and I think its good, it settled well there, no fuss or extra space is taken by it and sets well with theme also, and with that great rank, I think its better to show it off and let people know.

Thanks for the feedback Rick and shamzblueworld. I feel that a site's Alexa rank is an indication as to how popular the site is. It's not a hugely accurate figure, but it does provide a guideline. In the past I read that Alexa ranks are much more accurate for sites with a rank number lower than 100,000. I suppose it is logical that they would place more importance on ranking the first 100,000 most popular sites on the web.

Further opinions and feedback would be welcome.

So you're very close to getting in the first 100K, I hope and wish it happens soon.
I think FC has the prospects and ability to become of the most popular forums on the web.
I'd say a little more advertising would surely help in going towards it, I'm on quite a few forums and I've not seen any ad of FC anywhere, maybe you guys should invest some in placing ads via buysellads on other forums or buying ads directly from some of the popular forums.

I think BuySellAds are quite strict (or atleat used to be) in what sites they accept and require a set number of pageviews or visitors a month so that is something we would probably have to do in the future once we are a bit more established.

In regards to Alexa, I think it is a good guide to how popular a site is although as Rick mentioned, it is quite easy to get a better rank then really you should. It still has some value although I think it should be used along with other factors when considering how successful and established a site is.

I'm not sure what you mean by that jacktheking?

There are established websites that don't rank well because the owners didn't download their toolbar. :P

A large Alexa rank doesn't usually mean a high sale on Flippa either. Buyers appear to be more aware, and care less about Alexa. I feel like Alexa (despite being significantly larger/more established), will benefit more from the banner on Forum Coin, because Forum Coin has little to gain from it. But once again, that is just my personal opinion.

Topics merged!

Thanks everyone for the feedback, we will leave the banner there for the moment and see how it goes.

Thanks for the suggestions shamzblueworld, our plan and focus for the moment is to make ForumCoin as helpful to our members as possible. Hopefully our members will reward that commitment by telling their friends and contacts about the site and we can grow via word of mouth. So please do tell others about ForumCoin and mention it on forums and social networking sites - in a non-spammy way, of course.

ksridharprasad, Alexa is a business owned by Amazon. They rank traffic by the traffic they receive. The website that has the most traffic (Google) is ranked number 1, the website with the next most is ranked number 2, etc. They rank millions of sites, so although we are ranked over 100,000, that is actually really great :)
