A quest to burn the tiktok social media app in Kenya

Postby Treborika » 19 Sep 2023, 06:25

There has been a quest to burn the usage of the tiktok app in my country the reason being it it destroys moral among the youth by consuming vulnerable content.
However the issue is in the parliament pending discussion.
Do you use tiktok in your country?

Well i don't really blame them for wanting to take such action, these days the kind of contents you find on TikTok especially by young people is not even reasonable in anyway. The question is would this solve the problem?

I am not a fan of the tiktok in a matter of fact. I have heard about the kind of content that is found there needs to be controlled.

In USA, the Senate voted to BAN TikTok unless China sells it to America.

A Chinese company owns TikTok. The concern is that if the Chinese government demands that the company give them information about the 170 million American TikTok users ... who knows what they will do to Americans? Sounds scary. I would not dismiss the possibility of something bad happening.

"Facebook is just one of the sites and social media platforms banned by the Chinese government. China controls the content that goes on the internet. As such, it makes decisions on what sites are allowed. Any content that the government considers against the state is banned, deleted, or restricted."

We do use TikTok in our country but personally I rarely use the app, unless I am looking for a video on something in particular. Then again does banning TikTok actually change anything? They still have access to these things on Instagram and so on.

There is a lot of questionable content on TikTok app. Banning it may not be the most effective solution. Instead, there should be stricter regulations in place to monitor and control the type of content that is being shared.

In Africa, we do not possess such power to go against the Western countries and the other superpowers such as China. But if you were to ask me I would not give credit to a lot of the US products and services to be used by Africa because the US promotes rights and some of those rights are not tailored to suit the African culture.

In Africa, we also have the way we have been brought up and no one should take away our norms. So I do not think that TikTok will come and change our values and how we look at things. This applies to Kenya since it is part of Africa as well.

My son said he made money from Facebook reels. He said he signed up for the monetization and forgot! He remembered when they sent him some money.

How about that? Making money and you don't even know it.

If China can ban Facebook, US can ban Tiktok. However, the charges they have against Tiktok is not true. They say tiktok is selling data to Chinese government, truth is Facebook has proven guilty of selling data to businesses.

Would you like your AMEN!, with or without a choir singing.
Fact: ALL governments (and businesses) who have the technology already have our data!

I think they're trying to get "the unseen data gatherers" to openly admit it.
But that's not gonna happen!

That's like trying to get someone to admit where COVID-19 virus came from!

All these African countries always talking about morals. When they have endemic corruption. That one is not a moral issue.

It is high time we start embracing freedom in Africa because the suppresssion has kept us down. Kenya doesn't even know what it is doing.

Folks in the USA are still fussing and fighting about TikTok. Some people are making money with TikTok and want to keep it. But the politicians want to make it go away.

As for the youth? In the USA everybody says everything is corrupting the youth; especially social media.

So what is happening in Kenya?

I won't agree less that the things posted on TikTok could be plain obscene and dirty. But people are making money from it and it poses bi real harm to anyone.
