Photoshop it is. For vector stuff I use Inkscape because it's free and easy to use.

Illustrator and Photoshop are Both important.
Let me tell the difference.
Photoshop is best for editing raster pictures.(Regular pictures that get blurry/pixelated if you strech them too much)
e.g: Walpapers, arts, comics, banners, etc

Illustrator is just like Photo shop but specially made for vector images (They will never get blury and you can make them as big as you want but they won't lose any bit of quality.)
They are not really images with pixels. Rather they are coded numbers that create a picture.) It seems like you're drawing stuff on Photoshop with a paint brush or pen. But instead of using colors that are made up of pixels like in photoshop, you're using colors that are made of numbers that never lose quality.

Vector art is used for large scale stuff like business logos, Huge bilboards and banners, etc

I've never used Illustrator, so I would definitely have to go with Photoshop. Photoshop just seems more useful for it's given purpose. Illustrator sounds like something to be used by someone writing a book.

I am not familiar with Illustrator. I've only used Photoshop. So I can't compare them. From what I know, Photoshop is good.
