I have owned quite a few forums throughout the years. My most popular one had over 100 members and thousands of posts but it was quickly overshadowed by the official forums. It was a forum dedicated to a video game called "Mighty No. 9" and I made it long before the official dev forums were up and running for those who backed the game. I currently own another one right now, owning forums can be rewarding and is fun but they require lots of work.

I understand if it is confidential, but can you tell us what your forum is or what niche it is in?

I own a craft forum and run a Christian forum (my friend owns it). The Christian forum will be 7 years old next month and it's doing okay. It's hard keeping everyone on forums happy so that they stick around. Drama brings people in but it also moves people out.

As my forum grows, the more spammers started targeting it. I have a spammer problem.

Not sure if we're allowed to post links but I own a forum called Discussion Hub. It's a general discussion forum that is now just over 2 years old. I like to think that it's doing quite well although a few more members would be great!

Give people the option to log in via facebook or twitter. Here is the thing, teens hate emails and giving them such option will increase your chances of getting teens in your forums.

Good for you and welcome to ForumCoin. How is it working out for you? What is it's domain name, if you don't mind sharing it?

I just got Two-step verificationed in my own website. It is annoying but it is for my own safety, it is still annoying nonetheless.

Mika wrote:I don't own a forum but I have a desire to launch a forum. I got this interest after posting on various forums (paid to post forums). Based on my experience and also observation, it is difficult to get members and content if your forum is non-paying. But paying the users to post also does not guarantee quality posts.

This is the most popular technique for growing a forum but is traditional and we should have left it behind by now. The pay-to-post is not that efficient and is a PIA when starting from scratch.
There are better ways to get quality and constant traffic to your forums, new or old. I will mention one here: Who told you that?
Last week I discover that there was a prophetic fish that could predict earthquakes and tsunamis. I mentioned it to a friend and he asked, who told you that? I gave him the proof he needed, and he is now subscribed to that website.
And that is what is missing from most forums, there is nothing there to make me want to come back or go there or send somebody there.
So, the first step is to get people to start saying, look what I found! And they will send people to you completely free. If you do not have a pop-up subscription box, be sure to get it now. So when they come looking they will be kept updated.
I might just go ahead and do a full write up on this topic, post here if you are interested
