I like lighter shades for a nlog or forum this way it is very easy to read the content and more appealing to the viewers and readers.

Light greys can be good too, but those dark blues and stuff put me off. I like the color to contribute to the atmosphere of the site.

Whatever it is, either dark or bright theme. My point, however is the readability of the text. So I learn a principle on using the bright or dark them for a site. When the them is bright or the background, the text should be in dark to have a contract and it is not glaring to the eyes. The same case with the dark background, the text should be in bright or in white for a better visibility. The point again here is contrast and visibility.

I think that the readability of the text is better accessible when the theme is light, but not too light. If it is too bright against a dark background, it can make your eyes go funny.

I prefer dark themes alternated with bright for contrast. However a brighter theme is more optimistic.

I prefer a dark theme. It is really classy and good for your eyes because of all the light being emitted by the screen itself. It doesn't have to be black, just a dark, neutral colour is good enough. I also enjoy dark themed websites they are more interesting. It only gets tiring when they start using 'funky' or 'cool' fonts.

In all honesty, you should "Split Test" your web page and colors and see which gets the most clicks.

Even moving your sign up box to different positions on the page will affect how many sign ups you will get.

Use "Action Words" such as Click Here or Click Now or Hurry, Time is Limited.

Design the web site so that the visitor wants to be a part of your group or program.

Considering many users are using smartphones to surf I think a light background theme with bolder darker text would be ideal one. Too bright or too dark may make someone bounce back immediately.

I would chose bright themes over dark. I quite believe bright themes are more pleasing to the eyes.

I think if you use both dark and light colors it will bond better than using only a dark or bright theme

I prefer lighter theme, dark themes just make it hard to read or even look, lighter colors are easy on the eyes.

I think that it depends upon what sort of forum you have. Based upon the forum subject, dark and edgy will work a lot better than light and airy.

My personal experience is that clean white theme is much better. You can also have the dark theme. However not all people find dark theme good. Unless your website niche has dark vibe like gaming website etc. In such case forum theme as dark is good enough.

Me personally prefers Dark themes but I guess it's possible that more people like Bright themes.
The best would probably be a switch that allows you to choose between bright and dark

What is needed is moderation.
By this I mean; don't overdo either the bright or the dark theme.

I don't know if I have a light sensitivity or not, but everything seems so much easier to read on darker themes. I sort of have to squint a little with lighter themes.

I prefer a light theme. Dark is too depressing. Though I have a friend with dyslexia and she prefers reading white print on a black background.
