I totally agree that contests can make members participate more but the compensation here allows the site to run without even running a contest. I think that contests are not always real and sometimes just a scam especially if you are going to gamble some money on it.

Depends... For example many YouTubers give giveaways to their users and its real..they provide proof that they received the gift.I used to join a lot of contests but decided to stop a bit

Contest would generate interest in the site, and the rewards are usually better than the prizes that are given away to your visitors.

people love contest and winning it does not even have to be anything big just the thrill of competition drives most of us. the prize could be 5 dollars paypal or a giftcard people will want it
