Re: Sites that don't look trustworthy

Postby Angie10 » 27 Feb 2016, 18:43

This is a great question, @thisnthat :)

I would like to echo DreekLass and Old Friend's standpoints. I often go off the look and feel of the site. It may not necessarily be the best gauge, but I always go off my gut instinct. If the language skills are off, it really rubs me the wrong way. More often than not, those sites will even try to pass themselves off as something they aren't. I hate to say this, but I'm also very particular about where the site's based. There are certain parts of the world that put me on edge. I do try to gauge it on a case by case basis so as to not tar them all with the same brush.

The same here, if a site promises you a very huge amount of money in a short period of time, that sounds scam to me. Also if it has a lot of pop-ups advertisement, I really don't like it, it is quite annoying and we are forced to see.

For me it is always the best gauge. I have rarely been wrong. This is why I did not do any work on BMN. I took one look at that site and knew it would not be beneficial to me, so despite the raving reviews, I refrained from doing any work for them, which I was glad for in the end.

Yesss, that's a huge one for me, too; if it over promises and sounds too good to be true, RUN for the hills! That's my mantra.

I also tend to steer clear of sites that have been known to fold, having cheated its members out of their hard earned money, which then come back as an altogether different site as if nothing happened. Each time I hear this, I take myself far, far away from such a site.

Some of the ads that I click on Neobux - when I click on the, a video ad often opens up, and some of the claims that the people are making in these videos are just outlandishly too good to be true. It baffles me that people would poor their own money into making videos and marketing ploys that are so obviously scams.

Some of those same ads have been running since I started online 16 years ago and the reason is, THEY WORK! They just keep cycling the newbies through and there will be a new batch joining tomorrow. I almost hate to admit it, but I joined some of those scams 3 or 4 times until I figured it out.

Just by seeing the site, i can not judge about its credibility. I will check since how long it is existing and then decide. If it is existing for more than 6 months with considerable amount of members then i will think that it is a legit site and regd in it otherwise i will ignore

They probably know it is a tedious process prosecuting a scammer and normally their are very few people who would likely come out to give reliable incriminating evidence. Sometimes, these sites try to erase everything that would connect the owners to the scam.

I know that they must work on some level, but it just blows my mind because they are such obvious scams. But they know that there will always be people who will join their scams, so they keep it going. I have been with Neobux for going on four years now, and some of the ads that still come up have been around since I first started.

Wow, so even though Neobux is a legitimate site, it still supports these videos by displaying them on their site? The problem with that is that a lot of people who trust Neobux are likely to fall for those scams because they trust Neobux to have their back. There's always someone who's new to online working who will fall for these scams, sadly :(

I tend to give sites a "try" so long as they don't ask for my bank details or ask for "donation" upfront (especially if I signed up to earn). I mean, I usually look for online earning opportunities when I have time.

As long as advertisers are willing to pay the fee, Neobux is going to take the money and you can't blame them since that is the business they are in. It would be a cat fight if they evaluated every ad someone wanted to post.

Exactly. Neobux is a site for those who would like traffic clicks and views to their ads, to improve SEO ranking, or just so that people are looking at your advertisements and potentially consider the money making opportunities that they are offering, be they scams or not.

Yep, I used to think sites would not post stuff that was potentially dangerous or problematic for their members. I learned the hard way that it's not the case. I've seen some pretty sketchy stuff on a number of sites. I don't trust any of them to have my back. You're right though. I'm sure a lot of people think stuff is safe if it's on a site that they trust.

When they give a five second test and the question asks you if the site looks trustworthy then that is a difficult proposition. These days it is hard to tell if a site looks trustworthy because obviously scammers would like to blend in as much as possible and fit into that happy medium.

They just want your opinion, obviously there is no way to tell for sure.

With these types of things, you literally have to go with your gut and use your common sense. Don't just assume that all the stuff you encounter on legitimate sites are safe. That is like assuming that legal highs won't kill you just because they are legal.

thisnthat wrote:I have come across sites that look a bit sketchy before, but after seeing some of the tests on UH, it got me thinking... what exactly is it about a site that it makes it appear untrustworthy to you?
What is about certain sites that turns you off?

Too much flashy whizzbang content, garish colours and multiple pop-ups are a turn off for me. But if it is navigable and focused on a message that is understandable, then I am not too concerned about whether it uses the latest parallax scrolling, fancy background video/images or is just a simple text based html site.
Poor spelling I do notice and sometimes feel compelled to email the webmaster (no this is not a sexist term) and offer to proofread the site for them!
We are not all blessed with good design skills, but many of the better WP themes now take care of a lot of that for us. In my book "less is more" is a good rule of thumb to follow in web design.

That's a good point, @rchas. Not everyone has skill or good taste. Some people like wild and bold, but I think they should probably avoid it if they want to appear professional. I have seen some awful looking sites that are still good ones. There are also probably plenty of rip off sites that look good.
