I think one of the secrets it making it for a niche. For example, making one for people for one country. This way you can make it appeal specifically for that country, that culture.

If you try to compete with the big guys by going international, then I'd suggest making a social network about 1 topic (like gaming social networks, etc). Also, starting like facebook, with a small community (college) would be a smart move.

Many people have a sense of "nation" and will prefer to use national products instead of international ones. You could use this at your favor.

I know at least that a few months ago there was that buzz about Ello. I registered there and never went on it again.

as of now, I don't see any competitive network for FAcebook. FB already grew up and once a new social network arises, it would take time for it to beat FB unless it has a cooler features

If google tried to overtake the existing ones and failed, then I would think it is pretty difficult ;)

First of all you have to find the niche or niches and only after that you have to think about the your site!

It could be popular if it's something unique, like snapchat was made, and it's so popular nowadays. If it's a site like Facebook or Twitter, it won't be popular at all.

This. Make a football network, or gaming network, or something very particular. Don't even worry about competing with FB or Twit. Just do your thing. You may not attract the whole world, but you don't have to in order to be successful. There are tons of sports fans, etc.

Another option would be to create a social network that allows people to earn a bit of money in the process, either by rev share or by allowing them to post their own ads/etc on their pages. I think a social network that gives something back would be very attractive.

I am not sure if my point will surely helps, but you need a team to do that. For sure you will have a team :D but what I am saying is that, you need different brains working to make your social sites working likely of Facebook and Instagram. Or much better if you have something different and better.

I think it is a good idea to start one but it needs to be a quick hit to compete with the popular sites these days. I remembered when people were all about MySpace and Friendster and when Facebook entered the game, they are gone! I think MySpace is still around, though but Friendster no longer exists.

i think it will be better to do what facebook did at first, they started with a small but very good target. it is always about the target if you want to be successful.

It can work but it will take time to pick. There are a lot of competitors in the market already and you are likely to be green for the start. You can start with a dating site at least you can get some members.

I agree with this. Due to a lot of competitors in the market it will be very difficult to get members to join your site.

I really do not think it's worth the developers think we always need to innovate as the case when the HI5 was replaced by Facebook I think in next time even when not necessary will exchange the facebook the other most innovative and recent ;)
