So far I haven't faced such a situation but sometimes some responses do pinch and that's when you realise that you have been misunderstood. A polite thank you is how I usually react.

Yes we just have to show some level of maturity by simply saying thank you. Over time the whole mess would fade off and we get better adjusted in future dealings
