We all do it (or at least have repeats) to some extent. It's just that some people seem to have a list handy and go right down that list on every site they hit (even when it doesn't suit the site at all). I mean, there are bound to be repeats, since we all run out of new stuff after a while, but I think some people try harder to make conversation rather than just dumping posts on a site, ya know?

There are rarely set rules about how much time one must wait before making one post after the other, but it is like an unwritten rule. You can break it, but you will be penalized. Having said that, with my own forum, if I had paid posters I don't think I would mind, as long as those posts were not spammy.

Yeah, I've never seen an exact time limit, just the "not all at once" thing. I don't think it would be a big issue for me. I think it's less "natural" to wait around all day to make more posts. That isn't how people use forums, in my opinion.
What about bumping old posts? Does that bug you.. maybe only really old ones or those that have outdated info?
DreekLass wrote:Well on PL I wait eight to ten minutes between my posts. But any legitimate member could look at my posts and see that they are spread out in set intervals, and they would know that something was going on. So although the sentiment of this unwritten rule makes sense in theory, it is not all that practice for achieving the goal that it sets out to achieve.
Bumping old posts does not bug me at all. I don't like when forum owners tell members not to.
thisnthat wrote:If you were to set up a forum, and you were going to pay people to post to get it going, what rules would you put in place for your paid posters? Is proper grammar your main concern? What about length of posts? Is the topic/content the most important part for you? Describe what you think would be ideal.

Yep, it seems a little too planned and stands out if you ask me. Also, when there are very few people posting, our posts still stand out as being the only ones, even if they are spread out over time.
I try not to bump the super old posts, since I think it makes it look like no one has been active in forever, plus the info might be too outdated. I usually make a new post and sometimes link to the old one instead of bumping it.
DreekLass wrote:Good point, and that happens a lot - where there are forums jut starting out and have little number of members. With you being paid to post, it seems that only your name is appearing as the author of posts sometimes. That could look a little fishy too.

Yeah, exactly. I hate it when mine is the only name I see. It also makes it tough to keep things going when you get few if any responses. There is one site in particular where myself and one other paid poster seem to be the only ones there.
DreekLass wrote:I have had similar experiences. It was just me posting, and it got so bad that the forum admin was the only one responding to my posts at one point.

Maybe it's the same site, because I think I remember seeing you on this one in the past. Nah, maybe not, since I don't recall seeing the owner post. That's kind of sad, but I guess it's better than no activity at all.

I think if some of them were a little more easy going with all the rules, they'd get more people posting. Some just try way too hard or expect everything to be perfect. Regular members don't make perfect posts, so I think they need to stop trying to be an English professor and just let people have a natural conversation.
When I see a huge page full of rules, lots of CAPS and !!!! and even threats, before even getting started... I just walk away. I can't be bothered signing up for something like that. You just know they are going to be looking for reasons to give bad ratings.
