Yeah, I think it's a good idea to network with others that have the same or very similar topics. Plus, I just feel like I should give credit for the inspiration, if I'm doing something similar and got the idea from their stuff.

I don't think I'm competing with any site,in fact I tend to learn one or two things from such sites.I could always refer to them if need be.

I have to say, I don't actually have any direct competitors. But if I saw a cool site that I believed my readers would benefit from knowing about, I'd promote it on my mine. I'd want them to return the favour. But people here can be all about number 1 and could very well grow a big head and not at all be interested in helping me too. It's a sad state of affairs :(

Now that you mention it, I don't regard any other blogs in my niche as competitors, but more as people who share my interest and whom I hope to learn from. I guess it's different if a blog is business related.

* * I don't view similar blogs or websites as “competitors”, even if they technically are my competition.

But if I don't use that type of a “lense”, then my whole focus and work efforts can be aimed at ensuring that quality content is provided to my site visitors. My goal is to make their experience so pleasant and enjoyable they will want to come back again and again.

Also, sometimes (not always) your “competitors” return the favor. You direct people to their site. They direct people to your site.

File this under “prudent and best business practices” or just being nice like the Santa Claus at the Macy's Department Store. :D

It depends. If you are newbie in blogging it is not advisable at all, it like you telling your customers to try another products that is better than yours. It is disastrous.
