I would think you would make more putting your own referral in your signature, wouldn't you? Depending on the site, of course. But you would the make (hopefully) long-term referrals of your own to give you some earnings.

Yup. Made $200 one year selling my forum signature to multiple advertisers. I sold my signature on SEOClerks at the time.

This works well on niche forums where there are direct products people purchase (hosting, trading forums etc.). The key is to have an account with plenty of posts in good standing, that is widely respected in the community.

What forums do you sell your signature on? I'm interested in learning more. I'm sure you cannot do it on revenue sharing sites like this one since it might be a conflict of interest. I know you can ask to advertise your own site in your signature here, but probably cannot keep rotating it. However, I could be way off.

I know why sex sells this much because it was a porn site the person was willing to part with $5 if it other niches it might just be a dollar or few cents. I will like to sell mine here too if it is allowed.
