Re: Protecting account using mobile number

I don't see how could be protected my account if I give there my phone number. Only in the case my account is blocked and they have to contact me by phone. Otherwise I don't see the opportunity.

Because if you don't give them your phone number, and your account gets hacked, they can email you sure but what if your internet connection is down?? If they have your phone number, then they can contact you directly as soon as the hacking occurs, and you can act before your account's password is changed and taken over.

Social networking sites ask you two things to protect your account, which the original email to retrieve the account in case of forgotten or safe way, a phone number where sends code containing the new password re-set.

I disagree that it should be used everywhere, because some websites cannot be trusted. They will spam call and text you, or even send you spam on whatsapp if you aren't careful.

It is a little bit annoying though, that every time I sign into my account, it prompts me for my phone number. I decline it, and after a few logins and logouts, it will prompt me again. I don't trust facebook.

Here is the problem I have with that, I will provide an alternate email address so they can verify or security question answers. Yahoo, is always asking for my phone number, but if my acct is hacked, I do believe the hacker might get my phone number.

To me getting a new phone number, is a lot more work than to change a password to an account.. it is a pain when hackers strike.

I really wish we get protected by that because if they will share our mobile number we get prone to being hacked and it is very dangerous to be online once again. To protect your account, use difficult password too besides the mobile number.

It is a good way to add some level of authenticity. The downside, which is significant, is that you're providing your number to someone you may have no assurance of security/trust/intention.
I'd prefer OTP-like that you see in Google, for example.

It seems like anything to try to sign up for these days wants you to give out your phone number. I'm not comfortable with doing that. They do not need my phone number. They can contact me online or via snail mail, and those two forms of contact should be more than enough. I hate giving out all my personal info. It's too intrusive, yet we're expected to just willing give it all out, all the time.

There are two reasons for it - first, mobile number is a unique device to identify an individual. Second, it makes sure that you are not a "robot". I see no harm in linking your number there.

I experience this kind of system in my credit card and payroll account. I used to receive a message every transaction I made using my cards. So for example I receive a message for a withdrawal transaction which I never made that means my card is used by other person or is hacked so I need to report it to the host bank immediately.
