Re: Does an admin really need to be active?

Postby Sam » 23 May 2015, 02:02

I used to be a staff member on a forum where the owner/ admin made up around 1/4- 1/3 of the posts. The board got to around 45,000 posts and then was merged was theadminzone. The admin would create new discussion topics every day which would encourage a lot of posts. Whenever the owner was inactive, posts would drop significantly.

Moral: A forum shouldn't have to rely on the owners/admins to keep it active, members should be the ones doing that. However, it's always good to see admin engagement in topics that they are actually interested in.

You're right, as a forum member i'll be really proud and glad especially when i'm the forum starter and saw the admin commenting on my thread. It's just giving me the feeling that admin really cares for me and for everybody =)

I think it depends on the definition of "active." You can tell if they are active if the forum stays cleaned up, without a lot of spam, gibberish posts, and other garbage, and if requests/concerns get timely responses, even if the owner doesn't post a lot. I'd prefer a quality forum over an admin that posts all the time. Of course, it is also nice to hear from them sometimes.

The admin just needs to be active when you need to make modifications to the forum or address issues with the moderators.
Because who "takes care" of the forum are the moderators!

I agree, but in some cases the admin do this kind of things.

You are right. Admin don't need much to be active but moderators should! So they can see the what are happening in the forum.

I agree with that, too. Admin appeared to be on standby to help people is certainly better than one which is non-existent.

Moderators are the ones that should be active. Though thinking about the circumstances, the administrator should also visit its website once in a while. I do agree, admins should not be the active ones rather the moderators and staffs.

Well, sure, if they have a staff, they should delegate much of the day to day stuff to the staff. It is still nice to hear from the rest of the staff and the admin on occasion. There are sites that seem to be "drop it and go" where the admin is never seen or heard from after the initial launch of the site. I don't think that makes people feel so much like they are a part of something.

Well I believe there needs to be an active admin. Would you use a forum that was unused by the person who made it?

There are some times that you need to be active because you need to watch and guide the bloggers and forum icons so that you can control your blogsite and stay it up for good.

Not the most active, but active... I think they have, above all, be attentive to what is happening in the forum to maintain order and tranquility. So a kind of police :?: :?:

Of course or people would just spam it and not pay any attention to the rules. While most people use a forum sensibly there are the few who would take advantage of the fact there was no supervision and would ruin it for everyone else.

If he is the only admin on the site, of course, he needs to stay active. But, if he has the staff, he can delegate tasks to and other admins alongside him, an admin could take breaks often on the site, which is necessary in some cases to avoid getting burned out.

I don't want to spend time on the forum where the admin or staffs are not active. I was once on a forum where there was spam comments. The admin was no where present to delete that comment. I left the site.

I think an admin active motivates members to be more creative. And if the admin is experimenting with new ideas that certainly helps the site grow faster than a site with an admin not so active or letting the things happen on their own course.
