I would edit comments from my blog. They can take down your blog because of a nasty comment. I would edit to avoid such occurrence.

The example of them editing for SEO purposes sounds dodgy, and a bit unfair to the commenter.

I think it's fair for bloggers to delete comments sometimes, if they're abusive or mean to the blogger or other commenters. It's a bit disappointing if they delete them just because they don't agree though. For example, I followed a recipe I found on a blog, and found that it didn't work unless you did something differently from what the instructions said (it was a slow cooker recipe, and for some reason they said not to stir it for 2 hours, which caused it to burn). I commented suggesting a change and they deleted my comment.

I agree. Bloggers need to be open to feedback and engage in conversation with their audience, rather than silencing differing opinions.
