Why would we need a "Thanks" button when we have the reputation system? Is there really a significant difference between thanking someone for a post and giving a Thumbs up for a post?

I think you will soon have that kind of Rep yourself sprite1950 Members who make good quality posts and who are here for some time, can earn quite a lot of reputation during that time.
It is a great idea, but where will you put it Fergal? You can put it above the thumbs up or thumbs down, or below the quote. I do love reputation message though. I think it is more formal and more reputable.
I just agree on the above of giving a thanks button. I still have doubt whether the thanks itself be counted as a reply of 17 post., etc. Anybody have any information about that.
A thank and like button will be a good feature on a forum.Since likes are some of facebook greatest features, adding them on forums will make more social.
Thanks button was a great way to gather backlings. I think it still is but you have to be careful with all these updates that google has been roling out.
This is a great idea of putting these buttons. So instead of just commenting nice, thanks or I like it, we can just hit the button wether we like the information being posted or if we just want to say thank you.
I agree with fergal, like buttons are very encouraging to those who comments, you get points for reputation and also indicates that you are good at giving advices
We have the rep button which is similar. This thread was started in 2013, perhaps we didn't have it then. Clixsense has a button which is well used. It is for liking or thanking people for helpful suggestions and I can't see that people abuse that but do we need a rep and a like button?
I think there's no need for that kind of button although if there is it could be one cool feature also. This time I find the like button necessary so we would know we had posted a quiet good comment.
I agree, this is to limit pointless response because they don't have excuse, if they think they will give a pointless response, they will click the like and thanks button. And this is to encourage quality response too. I think we should set up a rule for it if we will do it. I would have counting my thanks and like button from there on when this one will be happening.
I would like to second grecy's opinion! I find that sometimes all you want to say is thanks, and not much else but because you don't have anything else to say you may end up posting what appears to be a pointless comment.
But I also agree with sprite1950 when she says that the rep button could serve a 'thanks' purpose. To be honest, the rep button seems to encompass a few uses; thank you, pat on the back for a point well made, agreeing with someone one, liking their comment etc.
Even if there is any " like " and "thanks" button, we can not just send that smiley alone otherwise it will be taken as a short post and we will be given a negative reputation points . So better to send a private message to say thanks and also if we like any comment, we can post a comment for that and say why we liked it
