I agree with you, if the website looks great but its pretty empty it won't be as good as one with a pretty barebone theme and good content. But sometimes creating your own theme will sharpen your skills too. As long as one doesn't spend too much time on themes and forget contents, I think creating theme is actually quite fun and interesting as there is a room for your own imagination and creativity.

I can't make my own, if only I could I would be proud to use it, but honestly I'm using those made by others too.

Once you get to know about tweeking or handling the php and html codes then one may be comfortable designing one's own site otherwise If you look out for free or things with footer links on it then it is good to use the designs given by other websites (especially WordPress themes being free to use with footer links)

I am not that good at creating themes so I prefer buying premium or ordering custom themes than creating ones.

I don't use my own theme because I can't think the best design for my blog. I just depend it to the free sites that give free themes.

I have always used existing templates and themes. However, when I have created JSP pages for my projects, I have used CSS styling to create webpage themes. That is a lot of work.

I have a WordPress site and use the free WordPress themes which I download free from the Repository. It requires lot of time to code a theme. And if you have no knowledge, then you can't. That is why I go for the free themes.
