Directory listing play an important part in SEO. Are you willing to pay for directory listing? Also, what if a web directory offers two plans, free and paid linking. Whereas, paid linking could get more expose than free linking (highlight, bold, etc) . Will I be able to make profits if I open a web directory?

From what I have observed it seems that webmasters are less likely to pay for directory submission nowadays because they feel it will not help their ranking in Google. Some webmasters have even started asking for links, that have previously paid for, to be removed from web directories, because they are concerned that Google will penalise them for the paid link.

That's not to say that you can't make a profit from a web directory. Would you be considering a general or a niche directory?

Hmm.. would there be any different between general and niche directory? I'm thinking of making my unuse domain a directory. I'm not sure what niche would it be.

In that case you would probably go for a general directory. There is lots of competition out there, including lots of free web directories. Have you any ideas in mind, as to ways that you could make your directory better than the existing ones?

I have a question if Google doesn't really count directories as proper traffic..how about if I posted my blog on a directory that is free to use...would it still penalize me?

I have did little more research on this topic and come to conclusion that directory listing is valuable, if the Pagerank of directories is high such as PR 3 or PR 4, you must build backlinks..

I dont think google will penalize you if you have a good mix of Nofollow and Dofollow links from Directories
