TeamTreeHouse

Postby Sam » 03 Jan 2016, 08:13

Have any of you guys tried out TeamTreeHouse? What are your thoughts on the site?

It's similar to CodeCademy but it's a paid learning platform: $25 USD/mo. I've just signed up. Initial impression, after an hour 1/2 or so of a Web Development track, is fantastic. I love how everything is very neatly organised, the videos are great, the workspace code editor is nice and there are little quizzes and code challenges to ensure you practice what you learn.

I had considered signing up to Lynda.com, which is by LinkedIn. They have an even larger amount of video content. However, I decided the interactive part of TeamTreeHouse is really beneficial.

Why pay $25/mo? I really think that's great value when considering how much my university education is costing me. A standard Uni paper costs $800 and I complete 9 per year. In NZD, TeamTreeHouse works out at $438/ YR (our exchange rate sucks) which is about half the cost of 1 paper (with waaaay more content and learning). I can use it for both Uni (I do Computer Science papers) and my web projects.

First challenge that I've started involves building a simple portfolio site.

Wow, that is a lovely and professional looking site, @Sam! It also seems to have a lot of resources and looks like a fantastic tool for those looking to go into that area. I had a look and it sounds like Greek to me because anything around code, web technology and web designing has me scratching my head LOL. Kudos to you and thanks for sharing :) I hope many others will benefit from it, too.

Since they let you try it for 2 weeks free, I don't see how you can go wrong. I think the price is reasonable if you are going to base your career on what you learn.

@DirkZiff...that information that you posted allows me to view any and every video on Lynda.com? IF so that is really cool. I always wanted to learn some new courses from there and if I can I would really love it. I am currently a newbie at coding and slowly working my way towards getting better at it. By the way teamtreehouse does look like a wonderful website.

TTH is an ideal for an ambitious blogger or website developer. There is a big opportunity for them to learn how to build a website, to make programming codes, to make apps, and at the end to go with a business.

But it might be more useful to someone with basic coding knowledge.. for someone with zero knowledge in these stuffs, it might not be a good idea to shell out $25/mo..

I haven't used TreeHouse myself but have seen it advertised a lot, especially on YouTube.

Sam do they provide any personal interaction or feedback to you as a student? E.g. can you submit projects to a tutor and get feedback?

How would you compare TreeHouse to teaching yourself from books and sites such as W3Schools? What are the main advantages of TreeHouse compared to books and free resources?

Thanks for sharing this. I guess it is really helpful to see a number of similar sites to help people (especially bloggers) to learn a few basic HTML code.

They have a pretty active forum going where you can get help as well as a Q&A section on every project page but no you cannot "submit" projects as such.

I have never used sites like W3Schools but I like information presented as concisely as possibly i.e. I want to be able to deal with 90-95% of situations. I think books are a fantastic resource but, from what I've found (because I have bought a number of programming books over the years), they have code mistakes which are never corrected and they are not interactive enough to encourage me to learn.

That's why I like W3Schools.com so well and have used it for many years. You can easily search for specific topics and after you read the examples, you can test your new knowledge right on their website and see if it works in real time. Of course a big advantage is it's free.

I have been coding websites with a text editor for over 15 years and I just went there today to test some CSS code I was working on.

Thanks for that Sam, it sounds great. I've been learning HTML and CSS recently and plan on starting on JavaScript soon. I may well sign up on TreeHouse to get some helpful video tutorials and interactive learning.
