Apache vs Nginx

Postby CyberFreak » 20 Jan 2016, 18:12

This is a subject that seems to divide alot of people. Alot of people rave about Nginx and say that it is so much lighter on server resources and can handle more requests per second but equally alot of people say that Apache can be just as fast. All I have seen is contrasting statements and benchmarks. Which do you prefer to use?

Personally I like to stick to what I know and that is Apache. There is alot of tutorials in regards to doing anything you want to do and most scripts work straight away with Apache. With Nginx it can be fiddly with converting the rewrite rules etc. I have contemplated playing around properly with Nginx but is it really that much better?

Well, these two types of web serves are to be evaluated as to their peformance on the web.

Nginx is a free, open-source, high-performance HTTP server and reverse proxy, according to what I read. And it is also known for its high performance, stability, rich feature set, simple configuration, and low resource consumption.

Sone of the sites using this are Netflix, Hulu, Pinterest, CludFlare, Airbnb, WordPress.com, SoundCloud, among others.

On the other hand, Apache is another HTTP server. It is considered as the number one server on the Internet. It is also an open-source HTTP server for UNIX and Windows NT.

It has the feature of Smart Filtering, Improved Caching, AJP Proxy, Proxy Load Balancing, Graceful Shutdown support, Large File Support, the Event MPM, and refactored Authentication/Authorization.

Basing on the above declaration, if I were a website owner/developer I would prefer Apache for its "proxy load balancing". that is what I thought of, for actually I am no computer or web expert. I am just a browser, a blogger.

Unless you are going to Co-Locate your own server(s), I would rely on the company that is doing your hosting for you. They are going to pick the OS and software to run, so all I want to see is cPanel or maybe WHM if I am going to sell hosting to others.

If you run your own server or a VPS (like we have at FC) you do get a choice as to what operating system you use and what web server software to run and VPS servers are quite common nowadays as they are more affordable. If you want to run cPanel then you are pretty limited to what you can run and what versions.
