Tracking can be invaluable if used correctly... it can save money and time and help you earn more $$$. The more detailed your stats are, the better (so long as they don't slow down your website)...
An example:
You sell T Shirts. You promote in a lot of different places online: facebook, twitter, reddit, instagram, forumcoin

etc. You also write good quality content on your blog in the hope of picking up some search engine traffic.
Awstats will tell you where your online store is getting
visitors from. It will not, however, tell you:
- Which visitors were most engaged (from the different sources). Were you getting a lot of visitors from Twitter but few sales etc. ?
- How many people went to your order page, but did not complete the purchase?
- What are the demographics of your visitors?
- Detailed analysis of Google search key phrases used to find your site. What keywords are you appearing for?
Tracking is something I've very much neglected in the past. It was a huge mistake with holderhost (although I did have a fair idea of where orders were coming from by using unique discount codes for different sites. No longer. I've installed Analytics and have integrated Google Webmaster (to get search information). I'd love to give
Piwik a try in the future too.
