Do you post controversial content to drive traffic?

Postby thisnthat » 10 Apr 2016, 18:53

In another topic, there was some discussion about some back and forth between members. The person didn't try to make this happen, it just did. The question is have you ever purposefully posted something that was maybe a little bit controversial in order to spawn some debate? Did it increase your traffic?

I have not done that but I can see how posting controversial content can drive traffic. Now my question is what kind of impression will those kinds of topics leave in the minds of those who read it?

I am naturally a controversial person. I tend not to think or have the same values as most of the people in society. So naturally, my views tend to stir people or inspire them to think in different ways than they might otherwise be used to. I have never done it on purpose though - I am just being myself.

I haven't done it on purpose, but I can see why it can boost up traffic. The influx would be great for a short time since like everything else, it comes and it will go! I rather do something that have better longevity and stay around for search engines to bring up.

Okay, now I'm totally curious. Why do you think posting controversial subjects is wrong? People have strong opinions on a number of issues.

No.

I don't like being misled or posting something to unrelated just to drive traffic.

Nothing wrong with making it appealing or arousing my curiosity, just don't fool me with non related topics.

No I don't do that. I don't see it as a cool thing to do. It I want more traffic I think the best way to go about is to be real in all contents I post. That would make me gain credibilty the more

I think the only controversial thing that I have posted on my site was anything related to Donald Trump. He seems to be the most controversial thing in the United States right now.

Certainly no more so than Hillary.

Hmm there are times I did but not intentionally. It is just that I try to write or post about a trending topic and there are times people notice it. However, the thing about posting about something common is that it is easy to find 1 million other articles or posts about the same thing, too!

I don't have a site of my own, but this is not something I'd do at all. I like a healthy debate as much as the next person, but I won't go out of my way to shock and for self gratification, in a bid to draw attention to my work. I feel like I wouldn't be being true to who I really am, and what I'm about.

That's not what I was suggesting. :) I wouldn't go out of my way to come up with something just for the sake of shock value, or post off topic, but I wouldn't shy away from relevant things just because they are controversial either. Then again, I like a good debate. Not everyone does.

Sometimes it is not even a matter of posting controversial posts, but then someone may take offense or feel some sort of wat about the topic, and then controversy arises.

I hadn't thought of that, true. Controversial to me doesn't necessarily mean negative or offensive. I just think of it as something people have strong (and opposing) opinions about. That was my context.

some things I write could be construed as controversial but I'm not doing it to bring in a audience its just a subject that may come up in the course of living life. Any topic that gets my ire up I put on my blog.

Snap. I am exactly the same way :) I actually cannot believe that people have become so blase and accepting of some of the obviously backwards values that society perpetuates as normal today. It blows my mind. Obviously, this leads to a lot of debates. Luckily I am a really good debater.
