Do You Leave Comment on Old Posts?

Postby moondebi » 19 Jun 2016, 07:35

By that, I wanted to mean whether you make comments on those posts which are too old to make a further value-add.
Sometimes, I find posts of two years back on the front page as someone has dug it up again. A few old posts might provide some useful information, but making a comment on those posts does not make a sense anymore as it will be listed after several pages and there is a less chance for anyone to read it.

If I can add something new then I will comment. Otherwise there is no meaning of reviving them again.

If the post is informative and I learned something, I would leave a comment. Whether it does any good for the website or not, I believe it is nice for the blogger to know someone out there appreciate what she/he wrote. It's just my personal thinking, because I remembered when I first started my blog, I had no comment at all on my posts. Then someone came along, and left a comment, which made me so happy. One view, one comment is still better than nothing.

Provided that a post has information that would be valuable to me, its useful, not matter how 'old' it is.

I thus periodically scour FC to look for interesting posts.

If appropriate, I then post comments on the same.

If the story on the post interests me why won't I leave a comment. That a post is old does not make it less important to new ones and I don't mind where it is being listed but after the information. It may even be richer than some current posts out there.

I use to leave comments on the old posts if their themes are yet actually and I have something to say about.

It depends really. If I have something to say then sure, why not. Otherwise I don't really bother so much. I sometimes will go back and read new comments on an old thread though and not comment.

Yes, I still leave comments on even old posts. If I have something to say then I say it, whether old or not, because someone might benefit from what I post.

Sometimes, the info is still relevant. If not, you might be able to update it.

Generally though, I think it's better to start a new thread for the topic, rather than to bump an old one.

Some forum owners detest when you bump old posts, and would prefer you to make a new topic, and then others hate it when you start new threads about topics that have already been discussed, so it can be quite tricky.

This is true. It really does depend on the forum. I have found in most cases though, if the post is super old, they'd rather you not try to continue it. I think it adds to the sense that people are only posting every so often, making paid posts stand out more.

If it's literally years old, I usually don't post on it (unless someone else has bumped it and I didn't notice the date).

I do leave a comment or reaction to an old post if it is a relevant topic or I have a good background about it. Then I won't hesitate to give my reaction.

If I need to post or I have to post something that I want to say, then I'll post it on the oldest post also.

I agree with both of you ladies! It can be a very fine line, and sometimes you just don't know what to do for the best :( I guess it's just one of those ones that you have to tackle on a case by case basis, and just hope for the best :)

I noticed that at Hubpages, I could see old posts back to 1 year old found on the front page.
These old posts are informative posts and recipe posts that I like to read.
Yes, I do comment on those old posts that I like to read but problem is, the author doesn't reply. :(

I understand why they have an issue with it either way. I do find that some of the time, forum owners will let you know what is acceptable and what isn't when it comes to bumping old threads and posts. It isn't fair when they don't let you know and then your rating is affected though.

For sure. I agree that you should not be penalized for something you were not aware of. They should make the rules clear. At least give a warning if something wasn't covered in the rules. I would never hit someone with a low rating for something I hadn't already made clear. It's really not a fair way to operate, and it discourages otherwise good posters.

Luckily, many of the forum owners that I have worked with have been patient and lenient. There have been a few zero tolerance idiots who penalized me for things I wasn't even aware I was doing wrong. But there are twice as many forum owners who will give you more than one warning.

I usually see those old post in here. I thought at first that when it is in line with the thread, I thought it was new and I can't remember at all the title so I will click it and read it. I only leave a comment if there is a thought that I can be sharing but when it isn't, i leave it there. Sometimes those who leave comment only wants the thread to come up again because they are really interested on the topic.
