Learning graphic design

Postby niche » 25 Jun 2016, 08:01

Has anyone on this forum learned graphic design without attending a formal course anywhere. Which software and websites did he or she use to become a graphics design expert. Is there any good free graphic design website or software.

No, I haven't but my husband is a Graphic Designer. We own a small Graphic Design business and he's really the creative brains behind it. I doubt I could ever learn how to be a Graphic Designer, though. I just don't have that creative bone in my body. I do pick up a lot of the theoretical stuff. My husband believes it can be done if you have the passion, by seeking out websites, videos, books and magazines.

I hope it helps :)

I agree with @Angie10's husband: "My husband believes it can be done if you have the passion, by seeking out websites, videos, books and magazines."

This would be the best sort of information without spending too much money. Well, at least you will know if this part of creativity suits you. Years ago, I thought I would love to work as a website designer so I took some classes at the college. After the first semester, I gave up since I find myself frustrated :) more than anything, but still it gave me some general knowledge!

I wouldn't call myself a graphic designer, but I have learned enough on my own that I don't need to hire one when I need graphics for my websites. I have also succeeded in selling websites that were adapted from free templates I applied to the clients goals by updating the graphics and writing appropriate copy to fit.

Wow!
Are you a sage?
I bet you are!

Kudos!

I'm also interested in learning graphics design.

How long did you take to learn graphics design?

I'm not a graphic designer; however, I am creative and willing to experiment. I learned to design "splash pages" as a free member of Easyhits4u. If you experiment with that you'll quickly decide whether or not designing is your "cup of tea".

Also, If you like designing you can upload your designs on Zazzle where you can have your own store. You're designs can be placed on bumper stickers, greeting cards and many other items. When they sell - Zazzle custom makes the product, packages it and ships it for you. You receive a commission because it was your design. Good luck. We all deserve to "hit the target" in connecting with the type of work where we are happy!

I think it would be fun to learn. I have done small things like with pictures but nothing that I would call graphic design.

@Sherryinutah I think I may just give your example a try. I am also a member of EasyHits4U so making a splash page would be a good start. Thanks for reminding me about that.

YEAH! That's me alright:
someone venerated for the possession of wisdom, judgment, and experience
Now I just need to figure out who is venerating me.

I'll let you know when I finish learning it. It's been 15 years so far.

Can you please share which website do you use for getting free templates and which editor do you use for modifying the graphics design

I love to learn different things related to it. I don't know but I just used to keep making my stuff on Illustrator. But I wonder if it is free software.

The website I use most (but not exclusively) is http://www.free-css.com/free-css-templates and the software I edit the graphics with is Adobe Photoshop Elements.

I used to do templates and logos in Photoshop a while ago, I didn't have any formal design education. I just picked up Photoshop and started going to town, it's not hard once you get the hang of it.

Interesting.
Why do you need to distinguish those who venerate you?
Are some sources of veneration better/worse than others?

I know some of basic graphic design stuff, but I'm not a pro at it. I guess I need a lot of practice, lack of time to do a lot of stuff is a problem for me... I wish to be good at it one day though. Hopefully!
I've learnt from online courses and youtube and some other tuts.
