You only need a webcam if you are going to do their mobile and tablet tests, and even then they will send you one for free, as it is specifically designed to record the test in the best way - how they need it. You have to apply to be a mobile tester though, and they will send you the webcam, which is worth fifty dollars.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping you would respond, as I know you are familiar with this kind of thing. I thought that this was the case, so thanks for the reassurance. I don't want to do the webcam thing, but I think I am going to do the audio and give it a shot.

You are welcomeJust t clarify, you won't be appearing on webcam. Just your mobile screen, or your tablet screen.

No, very few of these usuability testing sites record your face. The only one that I work with that does is YouEye, and I haven't gotten a test invite from them in over six months. With usability testing, they record everything that is happening on your laptop or computer screen, whilst you perform the tasks for certain websites, and talk your way through it. The only things being recorded are your voice and whatever is happening on your computer screen.

Okay, thanks for the info. I am more comfortable with that idea, lol. I think I would actually enjoy this kind of work (especially if I don't have to worry about changing clothes, etc. to do it haha).
Is the work fairly steady or pretty sporadic?

On some sites it will be enough to use a microphone. On some sites you'll have more opportunities to work if you have a smartphone or a device where you can download certain apps. On some sites....
they might require that you use a webcam.
I few of the sites I was checking out are:
TryMyUI, UserTesting, UserFeel, whatusersdo, StartUpLift, Userlytics, Enroll, Feedback Army MTurk, Analysia, uTest, Loop11, TestingTime and Erli Bird. I haven't actually done this work myself or had experience on these sites.
I was curious about doing this and so far, I haven't been motivated to take this route. I hope it works out well for you.

I actually really enjoy this type of work too. Firstly, they pay extremely well for just ten to twenty minutes of work, and some of the tasks that different websites want you to perform are interesting. I have a stutter, so that makes it more stressful for me than it might be for those that don't. That and the ratings make the job less enjoyable, but other than that it is cool work. The tests are not sporadic if you leave a tab open. It makes a noise when new tests come in. I have made up to thirty dollars doing three tests in a day before.
You asked some good questions on the mic and the tracking system. I was wondering that myself. I would assume that the screen recorder/microphone recorder can be controlled by you as the user. For those with experience, what kind of mic would you recommend?thisnthat wrote:Yeah, I think I'm really going to like it too. Do you have an open mic, or do you press to talk? Is there a way to shut down their screen tracking system when you're doing other stuff or is it only "on" when you're connected to a specific site for a test?
