Do you mention competing sites on your blog?

Postby thisnthat » 21 Jul 2016, 17:09

On your blog, do you ever link to or mention sites that could be considered competition? If a blog is on the same or a similar topic to your own, do you avoid including it? If you find something great on another page, do you link to it to help your audience?

I don't own a blog but I have no problem mentioning competing forums on hostBB.io. It really depends on your objectives, if you are simply trying to make money off your site then you probably wouldn't link to a competitor.

If I find a site has a good amount of elaborative information on the topic that is related to mine I see no problem mentioning it. I have done it many times and I believe in you get what is destined for you no matter what.

I suppose since I mention everything I do online for income on my blog in some categories like surveys this might be true. But I am sure that is not quite what you were looking for. I always link and use my ref link in my blog as well.

Honestly saying, yes I will avoid it because of competition. I will not mind if blog is on another topic in compare to mine, but if it is on same topic then I guess I will not prefer it on my blog.

I linked to many competitors and other sites on my forum: http://promotionera.net/showthread.php?tid=848

I think that we should not be selfish, a promotion forum like mines is supposed to help the users promote, not hide competitors on the back.

Good points. In my case, many of the projects I see on various sites are repeats. I don't copy them, although I have been known to use them for inspiration to come up with my own ideas. Sometimes though, the projects are really good, and I want to share them. I don't just want to copy them and use them like they are my own though, so I link to them to give credit. Also, there are often various steps in a project. Instead of "reinventing the wheel" and making my own tutorial for a particular step, I will link to a particularly good one to share it.

Liking out to a higher page rank or well established site is really a good thing to do. Since my blog is personal, not selling products or anything in that type of business, if I find a site that has relevant to my post, I do link to it. It is just another way of establishing your own credibility.

I think if you're looking to give value to your readers, then you should link to whatever will improve the quality of your post. It's good to remember that you're not working with one fixed "pot" of customers - there are always more and more every day. Keep thinking in terms of abundance, and always provide the best content to your readers.

Ideally you should keep your readers on your website, you could rewrite the article instead of copying it. If there's no other way and you HAVE to link to a competitor, remember to add a rel=nofollow tag to that link. This way you won't pass link juice to the other website so they won't benefit from your link.

Pretty much this. If you are linking to a high authority website, it's good for your SEO since it will increase your Trust Flow and even if those websites are on the same niche as yours, they can't be considered "competition" because they are on a whole different level. Let's say you are on health niche, you will most likely link to http://www.webmd.com at some point.

@IcyFirefly
Forget about PR, Google doesn't update it in years. Every PR metric is wrong nowadays, use it PA/DA (Moz) and TF/CF (Majestic).

Just my 2 cents.

Cheers,
Wal

I don't have a blog as of yet but I don't think I would link to a direct competition, unless of course it is beneficial somehow.

If the blog was my direct competition, I probably would not mention them unless that blog and I had some sort of exchange agreement. But other than that, I wouldn't.

Competition with blog, oh i am very new on this one. I don't want to think others as a competition when I found one, especially when we are writing the same topic, or maybe I will consider it as a healthy one. Being true to my answer, I would on the first and second times but might not on the third one.

No, I wouldn't mention the competition. I have a beauty site and I know there are so many others and I just call them 'other beauty bloggers'. I once posted a comment on a competitor's site and she removed it, but another organic reader asked where my comment went as she found it helpful and useful.

The owner said she didn't know what happened (a fib as it was using disqus) and people ended up going to my site to read an alternative review. Basically this reviewer had a free PR sample, whereas I paid for mine and discussed the problems of delivery and cancelling a beauty box (and something many people needed to know and had experienced), that was an issue the other site had no idea about.

I'm eating up all this information and my, there's lots to learn still LOL I guess some of the stuff that some of you more experienced people have said is down to personal preference and I'm guessing sometimes it all boils down to your own discretion. Thanks for all the comments, though :)

Although I'm getting decent views on my blog the earning potential seems so low that it seems like it's more a labour of love than a real earner. As such I would definitely link to other blogs in my niche if I felt they had something to add to what I'm writing about.

When I blog, I'm usually not all that aware of competing blogs. I feel like you are better off joining forces with competing blogs over vying to steal their readers though.
