Revitalizing an old Blog

Postby thisnthat » 12 Aug 2016, 14:02

What is the best way to revitalize an old blog that hasn't received any attention for a while? Should you just pick up where you left off? Should you explain why it hasn't been updated for a while (if there is a good reason)?

What is your opinion?

Even I have a blog which I have not paid much attention to. Maybe I will state the reason why it has been inactive for a while so that the users might feel good and I too feel responsible. And then continue from where I left :)

Just my opinion, but I would just start posting again and not say anything. It will be a very short time until new visitors will only see that it has been around for a longer time (adding credibility) and focus on the current posts and their value.

Since age is no longer creeping up on me, but rushing in like an NFL ball carrier on 4th down from the 1 yard line. it's very simple.

I too in a similar situation but I would just continue from where I left off. If need be you can redesign your blog just to give it a fresher look.

I'll also go with this. No need to explain unless you had active readers who are asking you about it.
Just start posting new content and it will pick up from where it left.

The advice from @old buddy is something I would recommend too. Just pick it up, post it, share it, and go to visit a few of your regular followers to secretly let them know that you're back online.

I left my sites for more than a year, and have just done this reviving them too, and slowly, I got a few comments from loyal followers on my blogs.

Okay, guys, thanks for the advice. I kind of thought that might be best, to just sort of 'kickstart" it. I was dealing with something major when I was forced to walk away for a while. I guess I'll just act like I'm starting from scratch and load it up with some good content.

I feel like you should just pick up where you left off, to be honest. There is no need for a big announcement, unless you have a giveaway or something like that.

Yeah, that does seem to be the consensus. Although, a giveaway might be a good idea. That might be a good way to give it a little kick to get it going. Thanks for the idea.

You are more than welcome :) Giveaways are great. It always gets interest going. It is basically the law of reciprocity.

Yeah, I like getting free stuff too. I think most people do, especially if it's easy to try for the prize. It will probably just be something small (like a gift card I earned on one of my sites) but why not? If it helps draw some interest, it sounds good.

I think everyone does, unless they have a problem taking things from others, but that is usually not the case. I would say give away more then one giftcard, just to increase the participation. If there are more prizes to be won, more people will participate, thinking they have more of a chance.

That's a good point. I guess I will have to wait a bit longer then, at least to start the contest. Going on a road trip soon. I guess when I get back I can earn some more cards to give away.

Oh, I hadn't even thought of that. I just assumed that you would purchase the gift cards. But it is such a smarter way to do it - earn it online ;) Great thinking.

From SEO point of view, it's better to remove old content which is not getting traffic. Once you do that you can get started with new articles. And that works to get some decent traffic to your blog. It takes time to establish yourself with blogging though.

Indeed it does take time. And effort.

I don't think there is anything really wrong with the older content. I just wasn't sure how to proceed, since it has been some time since I updated. Life got crazy. Now, it seems like things have started to settle down a bit. I'm hoping to get things back to "normal" (whatever that is) with life and with working online.

Thanks. I just figured since I have some sites that only pay by way of gift card, I might as well do it that way. I'd rather hang onto the cash I make for other stuff, instead of spending it on gift cards.

It depends if you have active users that were always visiting your site for any update and had a lot of people who regularly make comments then I think it's okay to explain why you haven't been on your site for long. If this is not the case then just go straight and start posting again.

I thought that it would be of benefit to leave old posts up in the interest of SEO? The more words on your blog, the more chance of getting hits right?
