Even though my English is not good, I am thinking to start a blog about sports.

I am plannig to buy a domain name and host it with wordpress free plan.

Do you think that's a good idea? Would I be able to put ads on my blog?

I am not sure with wordpress free plan and ads, but there are some people started with that. You could do what is possible and there are lots of tutorials in the net and YouTube to guide you all the way. Just search the exact words and you will able to find what you are looking for.

I like your idea. My personal choice is to experiment with free stuff like the free version of Wordpress, Blogger or other sites so I can learn as I go. I don't like knowing that I'm paying for a domain or hosting unless I'm pretty confident that I can monetize my blog so it pays for itself. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I am not familiar with Wordpress platform, especially with a paid domain name and running ads. There are sites online you can learn English, and apps too if you are planning on writing posts about sports.

Like @sherryinutah, I think using the free platforms such as Blogger and Wordpress first to see if you would stick to this commitment is a great idea.

Since you can buy a domain name for less than $1 a month and get good quality hosting for another $1 a month, I would wait until I have enough confidence in my plan to even start. If you fear you won't even earn $2 a month, don't bother.

I think with the free version wordpress also has the right to show ads on your blog... (not 100% but I think this is how it is.)
Its better to host it on your own, maybe use a free webhost, there are many that you can google and find out, its a better option.

hmm. I'll tell you, having run a small hosting business (with over 300 clients) they'll be cutting a fair few corners on that pricing.... but good luck nonetheless. Glad you decided to make an investment in your idea (hopefully it will keep you motivated!).

Side note: Can you add a custom domain with the Wordpress.com free plan? (I don't think you can but I am not sure).

You can convert your free wordpress site when you buy a domain through them or 'map it' but most people don't as it's more expensive. I self-host on my wordpress sites, and use the free ones to set up the content and layout, and then export the site over to those I am working on.

With any blog or site, most places won't allow you to place ads until the site has been up and running for a while. There a few that do, but they aren't always the best ads. You should think about your audience and whether those ads will encourage them to click or to close the window.

Your english is not bad. But getting people to click ads is hard enough. I find that people are less likely to click ads if the blogging seems like it has lots of mistakes. You would have to state that English isn't your first language, so people know your blog isn't full of errors just because.

You can add a custom domain to any site with redirecting and masking through your domain registrar.

Wordpress should have ads like blogger in order to keep up with the competition. If there are no ads on a free platform, this would mean that people would look for alternatives. I recently signed for Wordpress and intend to post at least 50 articles before thinking of monetization.
