What do you do with the unused domains which are not being in use in any way? Do you keep them in portfolio or just get rid of them?

I have a number of unused domains from past blog signups which I later abandoned due to the fact that I had not summoned enough resolve to see them through. I usually discard the domains I have discontinued using due to the fact that I don't keep a record of them.

I put splash pages on them and run free passive advertising to attract visitors, then if they are not at least close to paying for themselves at renewal I let them go.

How about using such domain for ads and as one landing page to the functional domain.

I usually just let domains expire if I'm not using them. I've never had a very valuable domain name to be honest. If I had valuable domain names that I didn't use, though, I'd probably hang on to them for a while to let the value build up and then sell them. :3
