When to move to VPS Hosting?

Postby skysnap » 18 Sep 2016, 07:00

I have one blog where I get 800 views a day traffic from monday to thursday. on friday traffic goes to 400 and sunday and saturday traffic is as low as 200.

Also the revenue of the site is really low like 20 cents a day or so. This has made me worried because blog is in programming genre. And there is no other way to monetize than adsense type ads.

I wonder when I'll be forced to moved to VPS hosting with traffic rising.

When do you usually move to VPS?

It is hard to judge this sort of thing. It depends on many aspects such as some element specific to your site such as the blog software used, what settings used, plugins used, how big your blog is and how your used behave. Are all your hits to articles or are there alot of searches being made. Also every host has different limits as to what they are willing to allow a site to use.

Personally I have had some experience of running a large forum on shared hosting and it was a nightmare but if money is tight and you do not have knowledge of running your own VPS, you can optimise your site to stay on shared hosting longer but there still comes a limit where you can not optimise the site much more.

If you are willing to learn, running your own VPS doesn't have to expensive. Many hosts offer VPS's for around $5 - $10 a month which should run a wordpress blog fine but you will need to manage things yourself.

Why are there no other options? Have you considered:
  • Newsletters (with ads).
  • Sponsored posts / reviews.
  • Affiliate ads.
  • BuySellAds/ Private Ads.
  • Selling your own products/ services.
  • Donations/ Patreon (especially for good quality content).

I agree with CyberFreak's comments above. As optimized VPSes will often improve site load times, it does make a good investment (rather than waiting to be forced off a shared host).

@Sam, some of the options that I have tried are - affiliate ads, adsense ads and donations. Out of which affiliate ads and donations didn't worked for me. Buysellads denied my application as they said I lack number of views for the good advertisers. I have yet to try newsletter and sponsored posts and products. I may work on it soon :D

Thanks to both of you for suggestion. I am looking at digitalocean plans right now. Hopefully may switch when time comes.
