512MB RAM or 1GB RAM for VPS Package?

Postby skysnap » 19 Sep 2016, 06:25

How do you decide how much RAM is good for the website hosted on the VPS?

I came across host where I have package to choose from 512 MB and 1GB of RAM. I just don't know which one to pick. The 512MB RAM package costs 5$ and 1GB RAM one costs 10$ so not much difference. But I am not sure which one to pick for initial VPS migration.

Have you migrated any basic wordpress website to VPS and how much RAM did you picked?

Wordpress sites can be rather resource heavy depending on the plugins you have installed and traffic but I think 512mb should be sufficient (unless you are also using a control panel...). I wouldn't know what the minimum requirement is as other than hosting on shared plans I've only had sites on 4GB + ram VPSes (or servers).

I only have the Jetpack extension along with one EU cookie plugin and few SEO plugins runing. Site loads in pretty quickly even with adsense ads. It's just that visitor count if hit above 1000 visitors a day then I am in trouble with shared hosting account.

Did your shared host let you know your resource use? Might be worth asking so you know what your site's requirements are.

I am on hawkhost and the cpanel there allows me to see the bandwidth and space usage. Not sure it will allow me to see the RAM. I have to ask them. But still I wonder how come it is possible to isolate RAM usage from shared host?

I'm not sure about the technology behind it but we used CloudLinux to isolate and assign Ram on different shared packages. https://www.cloudlinux.com/all-products ... oudlinuxos
