Linux the most secure operating system

Postby remnant » 19 Sep 2016, 13:28

Unlike other programs like Windows, Linux has far fewer incidences of malware. For instance, Linux detects bout 1,000 hits of malware on a daily basis compared to Windows which records 250,000 instances. This can be attributed to its configuration as well being less heavily used compared to Linux.

I am not familiar with Linux, but have read so many good things about it. I am always eager to learn and I have problem with not enough time in a day to go around. My nephew installed Linux Mint on my Window laptop, and I am yet manage to navigate around.

However, if anyone wants to learn about Linux, here are two links:

Yea, Linux pretty much is considered better than Windows on safety concerns. But Windows rules the gambit here. I remember when I took computer information systems back in 1998. Even my professor liked Linux better.

Of course this is almost always going to be true as long as the amount of users remains the same. If you wanted to make a virus that targets the most people you would make it for windows because they have the most users. This is why Apple used to say that their computers couldn't get viruses.

I've always been curious about Linux. I'd like to use it just because I don't like how intrusive MS is. The bonus of less attempted virus/malware would be nice too. I wouldn't know where to start though. I'll have to check out the links provided.

The best place to start (in my opinion) is with a simple distribution like PCLinuxOS that focuses on the graphic desktop to look more like Windows. Then start off doing nothing but running a browser (my choice is Firefox) for surfing the web. Just this one activity will save you from 90% of the malware and virus problems Windows has.

You can test it from a CD (or a USB drive) and not even install it, until you feel comfortable.

This is what I have been reading in a laptop forum, but for the life of me, I still am not comfortable. Perhaps, I am too old and set in my way :)

My nephew installed Linux Mint on my Window laptop, but that laptop is having lots of problems with being too hot and I always heard it running. I just paid a guy to clean out the fan and put in new thermal grease, but it is still humming all the time :(

I bought the laptop I use every night on Ebay for around $25, since it had no hard drive and was being sold for parts. You just need to know what to look for.

I use Firefox on both Windows and Linux, I love all the plugins and the fact they don't spy on me as much.

Linux is the best OS and Windows has gained popularity because of the User Interface. Now a days Linux too has got flavored versions like Ubuntu etc. Why most people use linux is that it was more of a command interface and many softwares which are used in software industry are not directly available as plugins need to be googled again, whereas Windows gets all compatible softwares along with the requids supporting plugins. Eventhough I use Windows, I still like LInux and trying to gain more knowledge on it. We can learn a lot on linux.

I have one computer I use primarily for accessing the Internet, so 95% of the time it is running Firefox. This is a PERFECT application where Linux beats Windows hands down in my opinion.

I have one damaged Linux machine, which i just revived and given to the parents. And they are using it with Xubuntu. It's going well. Older machine can make use of Xubuntu or Luuuntu as the RAM requirement will be low.

Another excellent choice for older folks is PCLinuxOS Mate, because the requirements are low and the desktop is very similar to Windows.
