I don't like frameworks, mainly because you have to trust it and hope it is secure. Frameworks are mainly for users to "not reinvent the wheel".

An example (I am inventing this code) would be a check if the email registration/login field is secure.

Normal code:
-check if email contains weird symbols
-is it really an email?
-MySql injection?
-to long?

Code using framework:
secure-email ("$email");

You use framework for any language when your project scope requires MVC structure. Model view controller structure is required when you want to get the project on modular basis. This way you have to work less and focus more on the output.

Unfortunately I don't have direct experience of using a PHP framework, however, a PHP programmer I know uses YII Framework and strongly recommends it. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but I thought that one might be worth a look if you are not already familiar with it.

I have seen its name on a few review sites. But I must say on every site now, Laravel is the winner... but I have asked a few friends and though mostly they also recommend Laravel, it seems, it is tougher to learn. And Codeigniter is the easy option.
