Compress images

Postby shamzblueworld » 23 Oct 2016, 11:55

How to compress images for your site? And I mean a site like a forum where users can upload images, how to automatically compress their size without losing too much on the quality side? Is it possible?

Reducing the size of an image if that is what you mean by compressing I do it using 'Paint' where they have the resizing feature.

The best way to resize your your images is Microsoft office Manager. Open any image with Office manager and resize/crop edit with just a few clicks according to your requirement.

Reducing the number of pixels in the image using paint will reduce the file size to some extent.

You mean to say Paint will not do the job. I always use it very effectively.

I use Photoshop, but it's more than most people need so I did a quick Google search for "'resize photos" and there seem to be quite a lot of sites which will do the work for you without your having to download any software to your computer. I only opened one link but http://www.picresize.com/ looks pretty nice because it gives quite a lot of control over the final size of your image as well as allowing you to flip and rotate it, and even add a few special effects.

I use Photoscape to resize my photos. Blogger size recommendation is 600x800 or 800X600, and it won't take up all the free space that they give you.

Photoscape is a free software to download, but if you don't want to download anything to your computer, then use the online websites: Picmonkey.com or Pixlr.com. Resize what you want and save your images for use.

For me sniping tool on windows 7 works best. I can crop the image and also if I do take whole photo using it then it also compress the output image by size.

I don't mean to contradict your statement but I have written what I thought worked best for me. You should use paint without taking my suggestion in account. Besides the OP is looking for something else. 8-)

I normally do all resizing of pictures that I need on the Photoshop. But here is a link which has about 10 ways to do it for your website. I hope this link will help you find what you are looking for.

Looks like it was not there in the link I gave earlier. ;) Don't worry, here is another link and it does say here at one point that, With WP Smush, you can set up automated smushing so all of your new images are automatically compressed when uploaded to your site. So probably this is what you are looking for!

Are you talking about compressing as in zipping the image? I guess on Windows if you right click you will find that option for compression. I have used it once but since I am not an expert I don't recall what it had actually done.

For posting on forums or web you can pre-compress and upload.

Decentlady, if I am not mistaken he is not willing to do it on his own but he wants his audience submission to resisize automatically like Facebook crops it according to acceptable size. It is done by software like nangk8 has suggested in her post above.

I did a quick Google search for Smush alternatives for non-Wordpress sites and couldn't find very much information.

http://www.shoutmeloud.com/alternative- ... bsite.html - this site lists a few alternatives but most of them require you to resize photos individually. The one exception is CSS Sprite Generator, but it sounds like it might be a complicated process. I suggest you have a look at their page: http://spritegen.website-performance.org/ as well as the suggested reading they mention and see if it's what you're looking for.
