When I ran a forum I had a forum currency. I didn't offer much, I allowed members to purchase things like username changes, usertitle changes, etc. It was mainly for fun.
We currently don't have forum currency and won't be installing a mod that allows forum currency since it's a gaming forum. Not all genres need to have currency, I don't think it would make any sense to have one on my board.
PromoBB uses tickets which can currently be used to buy forum services. However in the far future if we start earning a reasonable amount of profit I'd like to start rewarding users with real money which they'd get by trading in their tickets. However for now there is a wide array of services to purchase with tickets.

There are things you could offer and it doesn't necessarily need to be anything that would cost you money. You could offer things such as a coloured username, entry to a private forum area, a little advertising on your site, custom title, username changes, etc. I'm not saying that these are necessarily the best thing to do for your site, just that there are things you could do that would not cost you money and could be of interest to your members.
You could also allow users to pay for advert removal if you have ads on your site, more PM space, some special features that you have to pay to access like arcades, galleries, downloads or the ability to have their own blog.
Some of these free things Fergal and Fowler suggested are very nice. You could offer one service that costs you money but in return it benefits you because of members posting to achieve that amount of Forum currency
