Adblockers

Postby thisnthat » 22 Feb 2017, 15:59

If I decide to open a new blog, and I hope to make money by way of ads so I make people turn off adblockers, what responsibility if any do I have toward those people? Is it my responsibility to make sure that only safe ads are displayed?

What responsibility if any do I have when it comes to content? Is "curated content" (round ups of other people's work) enough or do I need to provide original content as well?

My personal view on this is you don't have any responsibility toward those people. If it's your site, you should be able to place and enforce ad-views how you like. It's their prerogative to chose whether or not to visit your site under those terms. However... Anonymous, non-tracking, simple banner ads are always nice e.g. from https://a-ads.com but be prepared to accept a lower CPM.

Honestly, I think some people are becoming more accepting of ads, knowing that they are there to support the content creator. For example, those who don't subscribe to YouTube Red (which is not as profitable to the creators) will often be willing to sit through the ads to support their favorite creators. The big thing is, if you don't want to drive people off with ads, you want to make sure there aren't constantly pop-ups that get in the way of content. An overload of ads will also drive people away from your site.
Also, if you nicely request for users to turn off adblockers, it's at least respectful. Popular sites like DeviantArt do this. They don't restrict content if you have an adblocker but in place of the ads is a banner that asks you to remove the adblocker. So it shows users that no more room would be taken up if the adblocker was removed.

I don't have ad blocker, but I have turned off pop ups, so it depends on the kinds of adverts you are running. f they are spammy type ones then it will deter people from visiting again, and is that what you want?

I would rather have traffic and people to click on affiliate links rather than have too many ads. I personally hate them when they are overkill, and they slow the loading of a page and thus I shut the window down. That's one way to lose traffic and a reader.

I don't mind ads at all so don't use an adblocker. The only time I ever used one was for Radio Loyalty because some sort of dodgy ad would pop up and redirect me to another site and I would have to go back to the beginning of the 10 minute stint and start all over again. If they're going to display dodgy advertising they must expect people to use an adblocker. It worked perfectly well with it turned on.

Yeah, that's kind of my point. :D

Wow, really? Okay, thanks. I do appreciate the insight. I just figured that if you force people to turn off their protection then you should make sure they are protected.

Indeed. ;)

It is impossible to ensure your ads are "safe" completely so I don't think it is too important to focus on being safe. I think just common sense and not putting obviously malicious ads in your site is enough.

I am not a fan of pop ups and pop indeed but I think they do have their place in some sites where there is a high risk of danger already and where users expect not such a pleasant experience. Sites like faucets for example which need revenue and are usually loaded with ads from typically minor ad companies.

I think if you require users to disable Adblock, you are giving them a clear choice. Do they trust your site? Are they willing to take the risk? If they disable their Adblock then they accept responsibility for anything that happens. Kinda like if somebody knocks on the door of your house and wants to come in. It is your choice but if you let them in and they steal stuff, it is your fault in my opinion.

Thank you for disabling your ad blocker.
And good luck with your writing!

Nice. Yeah, we do have to turn it off for earning sites. Other sites, not so much. If there is no responsibility to make sure the ads are safe then there is no responsibility to turn it off (unless it's a paying site).

I like Cyber's analogy, but I see it more like this:

Come on in. Just take the leash off my dog.

Um.. I don't know.. What if he bites me?

He probably won't, but I won't guarantee it or do anything about it if he does. Take his leash off anyway or you're not getting in.

@thisnthat - To think of it, the only time I have problems with ads is when I visit the sites where I want to stream a movie. My anti-virus goes off. Ding! Ding! Ding! As for other sites I've visited, I have not had very many problems with ads that were “bad ads”.

The site is EasyBib. I use it often to help me when I'm writing.

It's been a while now. When I first installed my browsers I went into settings and made certain choices how I wanted sites to appear. I can't remember how I disabled my Ad blocker. I just remember I went into my privacy settings.

I use adblockplus. There is an icon in the toolbar. You can just click on it to get options like "disable for this page only" or for a whole site. So, you can make changes as you go, to allow trusted sites, earning sites, etc.

Seeing a few ads isn't a big deal. The problem is that some sites are literally stuffed with ads. You may click on one by accident, just because of the clutter. They can also violate your privacy, track you around the web, and some can even contain malware/virus, etc. When I turn it off and my AV starts going nuts, yeah, I turn it back on. I hope you clear your cache often as well.

how can you make people turn off their adsblockers? I am also earning money from ads but I never told them to turn off or skip the ads. If they are busy then can always skip the ads but if they watched the ad then THANK YOU. I have a viewer he lives in Canada and all the time he comments on my video that to support my channel he is watching my ads even it is 12minutes long ad. Then I say Thank you but if you are busy you can always skip the ad.

You may have noticed on some sites that there is a script used that won't let you proceed until you turn off the adblock. In other cases, there is a pop up that just asks you to but will let you proceed either way.
