Is Malwarebytes really that good?

Postby sprite1950 » 27 Feb 2017, 07:59

I have always believed that it was one of the best programmes to pick up a virus that your normal antivirus didn't but yesterday, because my computer was really slow, I ran it and it showed nothing. Then I decided to run Superantispyware which brought up a Trojan in the form of a fake facebook. Why didn't Malwarebytes bring this up?

Do note that antivirus and security market is very profitable industry. Here often the viruses are created by the companies who make the antivirus themselves. So often virus or trojan created by one company is not readily available with another. So some of such security issues always slip up.

First and foremost, is your Malwarebytes up to date? If not that would explain why it couldn't detect the virus.

Malwarebytes is a good program, but no program is perfect. That's why it's recommended to have 2-3 programs on your computer. I wouldn't call it a "bad" program just because it failed to detect a virus once.

Do you use the new Malwarebytes (version 3)? I upgraded and had nothing but issues since upgrading and even some protection not working properly and not being triggered by their own "test" webpage which should have been blocked. I have personally lost alot of trust in the new version because of this.

Malwarebytes I was told wasn't exactly an anti virus. I downloaded their trial version and had no complaints really but for some reason I wasn't really confident about purchasing its premium.

I would still have atleast 2 anti virus installed just to keep cross checking.

I have always wondered about this bit. I am now convinced that antivirus companies are generally devious busineseses seeking to reap from the misfortune of us users.

I use Malwarebytes Free 2.2 once a week or more often if I think I might have a problem. It always updates automatically. In addition I use Bitdefender which I like. I've tried numerous antivirus programmes but have finally settled with this one. Occasionally I run Superantispyware and to date I've had no problems.

I don't pretend to know a lot about these programmes but if things are running smoothly, which they normally are, I don't give it much thought. I was just surprised that Malwarebytes didn't pick it up as it's discovered plenty in the past.

It's not an anti virus program. It can be used in conjunction with one.

It's usually not advised to have more than one antivirus program on your system as far as I'm aware. They can create conflicts with each and with other programs.

I don't think Malwarebytes Free updates automatically. Only the premium does. I use the Free version too and everytime I open it, it tells me that I need to update my databases.

I used Malwarebytes for my cellphone.
Very useful to stop the malwares for certain sites but clashes with anti virus.
Had to remove one of them

Windows has lot of security issues be it any OS. And a lot of security issues are made up. For example many virus and spyware which they say exist are not real but just made up. However it's better to have one antivirus, anti spyware like malwarebytes and firewall. That's the minimum that you can have.

When I say it updates automatically, it will prompt me and if I don't do it, it will search for updates and then carry on. Is that what you mean? I'm not a techie so don't know too much about these things. My pc is running very smoothly again now since I got rid of the Trojan which showed up on Superantispyware so I guess that was the cause of the constant freezing and sites not loading.

For the free version, you must manually click "Update databases" to get the updates. Automatic update means the program will automatically update itself (without you prompting it to) whenever new databases are available. From what I know, only the premium version updates automatically and if you don't update often enough, your databases will be out of date (meaning there are new viruses that it might not be able to detect).

I've got an anti-virus program as well as the free versions of Malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy, but I don't often remember to run the last two so I'm glad this thread has reminded me to run them now. This is the first time I've heard of Superantispyware. It's pretty late now and I've got a few other things to finish up, but perhaps I'll have a look at their site when I've got more time.

I find it brings a lot of adware up but this last time it showed a Trojan so I think I will be running it more often. Like most antivirus programmes it has free and paid versions.

Thanks. I'll probably give it a try in a day or two because my computer is really sluggish right now.
