I recently read about .onion domains in this thread and it got me thinking about the appeal of creating a TLD. People offer subdomains along the lines of yoursite.freehost.com but it would be great if you could actually offer TLDs.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to how that could be achieved?

.onion is a little different from most TLDs. I'd imagine it would be complex to create something similar.
ICANN opened up for anyone to register their own gTLD in 2011. The initial price to apply for a new gTLD was $185,000.

I once researched on this, there was a guy David from USA who helped me, and it wasn't that expensive back then either, I am talking about in 2008/09, and at that time there weren't even many TLDs that you can get today, I did thought of many on my own that actually exist today, but I got to a point of understanding that it is a work to be done by an organization or firm or even some government, not that easy to do for an individual.
Quite a lot of paper work and submitting applications are involved in the process. And as Sam mentioned, now a lot of money too.

The Irish TLD is .ie. A few years back I noticed that com.ie wasn't registered. At the time .ie domains were only available to people with a business name of that domain registered. As I thought yourdomain.com.ie would be a pretty good domain, I went to the trouble and expense of registering "Com" as a business name. Unfortunately when I tried to register the domain, the application was refused, because .com is a TLD. I was chancing my arm and it would have been nice if it had worked out

Scarface from Adminads already got me a TLD..now I just have to get the website for it designed...a wordpress site would be good that I could later on tinker with and use the same theme for a couple of other projects but I can't seem to understand it at all sadly.

I have found out that we can also sell TLDs by becoming reseller of big companies like Godaddy & eNom.

I have read many bad reviews about Godaddy's reseller plan, so, I don't recommend trying them for reselling domains.

I registered a business name, which was €30. It would have been much more expensive if I'd created a limited company. Thankfully I went for the cheaper option.

You can't register a tld just for you want it to, there are many complications and standards that your tld should pass out from and many voting rounds where people test how about your tlds from various ways. Its a tough and costly task. Its merely for the organizations to create tlds for themselves for limited use or for organizations who want to earn on internet through their tlds.

The only way I know of getting my own TLD is to buy it. Yes, when you buy according to preference, you get your own be your name.com, etc.
