Why do many bloggers prefer to use subdomains for their blog

Postby niche » 28 May 2015, 00:36

Why do many bloggers prefer to use subdomains like .blogspot.com and .wordpress for their blog. While the subdomains are free, the revenue from the subdomain blog will be much lower. Why dont the bloggers invest a small amount to get their own domain name?

I think you've pretty much answered your question. I have been blogging for quite some time and I'm pretty sure bloggers that uses a free blogging site such as blogspot finds it more easier to set up their own blog and what's more, it's free. In addition not all bloggers do it for the profit.

Many of these bloggers spend a lot of time updating their website. Are these bloggers not aware that they can make money from their blog with their own domain name, or do they not want to take the risk of investing even a small amount on domain names

I once tried that and I left the habit. If I really want another site, I easily buy a new domain name and add the content I want. This helps me to keep my main site performance good as opposed to adding sub-domains which may not even be of value.

many people are using free blogging platforms because of the following reasons
they don't know how to launch a self-hosted blog (registering a domain, buying hosting etc.)
They don't have money or do not want to spend money on domain and hosting
they want to just experiment.

That's true. We can practice using the free domain. when I was starting, I even got confused about Wordpress.com and Wordpress.org. A member from a blogging group explained about it and from there I started to search for details.

The reasons you have stated are true. I started with a self-hosted blog on wordpress. It cost money to use a self-hosted blog and people who are just starting our do not want to spend money on something that they do not know.

It is true that many people start on free blogging platform, however, soon they will be tired and start deserting their blogs. Monetizing is difficult in free eblogs

I don't think that they want to 100% use it, it's just that a lot of these bloggers may not have the funds to get a .com domain so they decide to keep their free subdomain.

Like I have been saying, sub domains are best sites for starters and or those who don't wish to use extra money or costs in Blogging. What you shared above are reasons which many base on. I personally use them for testing or developing purposes since a custom domain is my choice if I decide to blog.

The thing is, I would rather use a free subdomain like wordpress.com than one of those free domains. I hate free domains especially ones like .tk.

dot tk got a bad name because people abused this domain. A lot of people used this domain to do illegal things.

I personally started on blogspot because I had no flying clue how to do it and this was easy to set up a blog here. Secondly I wasn't in it for the money, its only when I bought my own domain name and struggled with it I started to think about earning from it. However, my lack of technical skill became a such an annoyance that I decided to close the site. I wish I had the time and the know how to get that site running for longer..

If you are ready, willing and determined, trust me you can do all at once. You are able to make the most off your blog if you are posting things which you like and love. I am of a view that blogging is passion to those who love it. May be you didn't love to blog and which is why you closed it.

Having more sub-domains is a symbol of the trust factor. Google loves sub-domains and you are less likely to get penalized.

Using subdomains on your site can help your main site, for example if you have a website, you can use forum or blog in the subdomain. Since subdomain are also treated as an independent site, you can drive traffic and backlink to and fro.

Sub-domains are very useful if you are not interested in investing for separate domains. You can create a blog for another niche and make a profit.

I think using subdomains from free sites like wordpress, weebly, blogsot is not a good idea if your primary concern is making money. However, you can use subdomain on your self hosted site.
