What do you think of the controversial show more button?

Postby Netherrealmer » 02 Oct 2019, 14:56

One think I like about Forumcoin is that every posts and every detail on every posts is revealed. Many website and forum owners though are greedy for clickrate. The profile of this Youtube streamer is not fully revealed because Youtube, want you to click more. So they hide his profile and you have to click show more so you can read it.

Image

I want to read what this person typed but in able for me to read the whole paragraph I have to click "read more"

Image

Oh this person got 14 replies and I want to read but I have to click the view 14 replies button. :x

This so called show me more button is super annoying for users, especially mobile users. Why do websites and forums do it? Apparently they make more money with these annoying buttons. Advertisers uses Click rate as a basis to advertise on a website, so Many websites like Youtube abuses this so their click rate increases.

A forum with premium memberships have the auto collapse the "show me more" buttons feature for people who hates it. I hate it but I understand why website owners want it, they want click rate.

You are very observant. You know, I didn't notice that so I need to go back to see how FC presented its posts. It can also be that I don't get annoyed easily or I am too busy to notice these things.

A lot of sites us that system. I have always considered it a way to show the beginning of each post so you could browse through and find just the ones that grabbed your interest. Click the link to read the rest. I really don't think it is to increase click rate, but rather, it is just to eliminate the boredom of scrolling through every line of each post before you can find ones of interest.

If every line of every post was included on all pages, the load time would be much longer, and you end up wading through a lot of crap you just don't want to read. I like the show more link so I can just browse the opening lines and just pick the ones that interest me.

For me it depends what the site is about. I usually don't like that 'button', especially if I must register on that site to see the rest. I don't care if they make more money as long as I can see the whole post or something without having to register anywhere.

For example, I've been searching for something on google today, and I found an interesting article on some random site I'm not intersted at. But I couldn't read the whole article because I wasn't registered. As I didn't want to register, I have no idea what was the end of it.

The only case I don't mind it is at shopping sites. If I'm scrolling and I see the picture and a little description of the product that interests me, I will gladly explore everything about it, but it would be really bad if I'd have to scroll and pass all the information and details about every and any product which I don't really care for.

Text dont really consume much data, I want to read a whole content without having to click a button. It can be annoying especially in smart phones. Click rate is the main reason they do it but I guess you wanna defend it. They should give people option to skip the "click more" button and have everything collapsed. It will cause rage if forumcoin did it.

Well, technically, FC does do this. I realize it is not a site that displays a variety of articles on a single topic and you have to click somewhere to read the rest of the selected article, but it is indeed nearly the same idea. The only reason I might find it objectionable is if there is only one article on the entire page that you found in a search, but have to click again just to read the rest of that single article, or worse, have to subscribe before you could access it.

Look at the index page. You scroll through the list of topics and click on just the ones of interest. Just as you select a site of interest that only displays the beginning lines of each article, you can further limit the FC displayed list by first selecting a specific category or forum and then browse just that list of topics and then guess what? ... click on the ones you want to read.

Can you imagine how frustrating it would be if you had to wade through every line of every post before you found a topic of interest? What if the page you are visiting has dozens of articles? Do you really want to read through every line of those that are of no interest before you find one you want to read?

Whether it is just title line of a topic, or the first few paragraphs of each article, the display is to let you choose the ones you want to read. The added click just opens the one you are interested in. By the way, many articles include pictures and other content beyond just text that could very well slow down load time.

What is the big deal of clicking a link to read the rest of just those of interest? AI is getting smarter all the time, but I don't think it has quite yet gotten the hang of mind reading to know which specific articles you personally want to read but I suppose even that may be possible in the future.

Yes, I dislike this "show more" button. Sometimes the admins of a resource just try to get your attention this way. For instance, when I click "show more" on Telegram, I am sent from one Telegram channel to the other and I cannot find the information I was looking for. As the result, I decided to never click this button because usually it is like a trigger to get some kind of attention from users and there is nothing special in this hidden content.

I also find that annoying , I usually see if there is a link to see every thing. Sometimes each page with pictures take so much time to load. I would like to have a glance at everything and just pick what Part i want to read through.

I think site owners deliberately does this to get people clicking and clicking on more pages on their site. I find this very annoying and a Cunny way of keeping more than necessary on a site.

Many simple features of many websites became more complicated for the sake of click rate,They are not contented with the high traffic. They want more click rate.

Text don't consume many dana but it is not user friendly when you must scroll to get what you want. If those buttons don't generate pop up ads or something else, they are good since you can easier navigate trough site.

But easier to navigate site means lesser click rate. New websites dont use this but popular websites use this because they know their users cant live without them

Different people have different opinions. Some prefer to read while some prefer to read detailed posts.

By showing a summary the websites try to cater those who love summary. There is also show more button which will help you get the other details. Even best quality websites do that.

Though it is annoying for readers, in some cases, it appears a necessity. Consider the case.

Someone wrote a 3000 word long article with summary at the top. He does not have that "Show More" button. Now, as a reader, you are likely to see how big that article is and skip reading it altogether. However, if a summary is there in the beginning and everything else is hidden behind a command, then you are at least expected to read the summary. If you find article interesting based on summary, you won't mind clicking the link and reading full 3000 words.

However for smaller articles, that is really irritating.

Popular websites have much more content than new sites so they add this button to increase loading speed of site.

They don't do it for loading speed, they do it for click rate. I understand if we are talking about picture but they do it to text.

I don't actually mind such buttons, in fact, I like them. They make comments, replies and descriptions compact and i waste less time scrolling through a page, for example.

It is not helpful though if you want to read everything and when the show more button becomes unclickable because of a bug.

This is a clever tactics indeed! However, may be in some cases, Show more could just be a way of programming and not load all the data at once?

That is what they claim but the real reason is to increase click rate. Be happy we don't have that feature in forumcoin yet because Mylot already uses it.
