What's in a (domain) name?

Postby Masterminor » 05 Jun 2015, 00:20

I used to only believe there were simply three types of domains. .com .org and .net I know that a .com domain is for commercial use, ,org can only be used by organizations (to my knowledge) and .net is used for networks. but in recent years I've been exposed to a whole new world of domains. .me .to .work .casa

what does it all mean? if someone could make me a for dummies list of what all these mean/are most appropriately used for I'd greatly appreciate it.

I am aware I could google it, but if I ask on a forum of webmasters I know I'll get an accurate answer. Even google can be wrong about some things, especially on sites like Wikipedia where anybody can change the content of the wiki page.

I believe ev ery domain name extension has its purpose, for example, the .info for information, .net for networking, .forum for forums and etc. Your choice of what to buy is determined by exactly the business you are into. And if not, you can go for a generic .com

In simple term a domain name is your address on the world wide Web. However, your address will be visible only when you also have hosted your domain

I have seen some scary lineup of domains. I have seen dotninja, I have also seen dotwtf. They are very unusual though.

Indeed, many of those new domain extensions are unusual. You find a domain and fail to understand what it means.

I was offered a domain for my website but, it was so expensive for me. My website was newly created by WIX and am still making it profitable. I may buy a domain next year.
