When I started my website, I was only thinking about making money. Ten months down, I am thinking something different. Now, I don't want my website to become a money-making machine, I want it to self sustain all the while building my portfolio and authority on the subject.

making a lot of money and self sustaining are two different things. In order to make my site self sustain. I need as much money as I require to pay the domain and hosting renewal fee, which is just about $50 per year. In order to make my website work as a money-making machine, I will have to think about earning at least $300 per month.

You are interested in earning does not mean you are actually earning. making money from your site is not easy. Therefore, I was considering why should I concentrate on something that looks very hard. Why not try other things and let the site just earn maintenance cost.

Yes, the website needs to earn so that owner does not have to renew hosting and domain from his pocket. However, it is really important for a website to earn more than what it actually needs. Can we judge the success of a website based on the revenue it generates?

It is up to the owner. My forum just give me enough money to keep it running. Its not making millions but 50 dollars can pay some bills.
