Block countries from registering from your site

Postby Netherrealmer » 12 May 2021, 13:21

I don't want to discriminate people but lately I now understand why some admins block certain countries from registering their website. Yes those countries may have some talented people who can contribute to the site but sometimes violators mostly came from the same countries. I don't want to block a whole country but I get spammers from a certain country. I get racist and hateful post from a certain country, I get sexist post from a certain country and I get low quality posts from a certain country. My site is still open globally but I now understand the perspective of some sites that discriminates a whole region. If the registrants from one region is hard to control, most people will tap out.

I do not have a user generated site, therefore, I have no experience on this regard. But I perfectly understand this because as a user on numerous site, some sites receive low quality posts from specific countries.

This needs a country/region restriction feature from the hosting/domain provider.
However I don't think we have to block any country.

There are some countries with a lot of spiteful hackers and troublesome folks. That could be the reason for blocking such countries on different sites.

I understand all these reasons. However, I don't think other countries are devoid from such atrocities if I may call it so. If site owners feel like blocking certain countries does the trick for them, it's their site so..

Some sites started this project. They charge you for comment and when comment is reviewed, they pay you money back. Or some started charge for comment section. no matter is comment bad or not. At least they will earn some money.

But I think it is good for the countries who are restricted, because of some hackers, spammers, totally the country will lose some of the good sites

I got tempted once but I have a good member from that country and I don't want to lose that person, So I just have to endure such members as annoying as they can be.

I am on a site that once blocked users from Pakistan and Nigeria because the site was receiving a lot of spammers from these countries, but there were good members from those countries. Therefore, I feel unjustified to block the entire country

I remember in Mylot, there is a country with the most misogynist members, I always see members from that country that blames rape victims on why they are raped and also blames scantily clad women. Those posters are from the same country but there is a member from that same country that calls them out. As annoying those members are, it is not good to ban a whole region because of them.

I blocked people that uses outlook as an email service though as majority of spammers uses outlook.

I will have to agree with you on this. My outlook is always spammed. I started receiving spam emails a day after creating email account.

Well I can just say that it was sad to det such audience that is so annoying in many ways but mark what I have said "the audience"this means it has got nothing to do with a country but rather audience who fall with your ideologies.I have come to realize that most Islam populated countries tend to have a certain repulsive and sarcastic characteristic. But you just have to endure with various characters of people. That is what makes you a leader but if it gets put of hand you have to discipline that individual members.

Please do not consider banning the whole country and let innocent and we'll cultured members suffer or lose out at
their expence.

I worked on a site several years ago that provided a very high income for more than 3 million members over the 10 to 12 years it existed. My average earnings there were well over $400 per month and I came close to $1000 per month several times. I was not even a high earner on that site. The earnings were entirely from Shared Adsense revenue.

The quality of the content varied, mostly depending on where the poster came from. A very high volume of junk and offensive content came from specific regions and the site owners finally caved to the workload of just moderating that junk. There were times Adsense turned off revenue for everyone when some of that offensive junk violated google policies until it was found and removed. They finally just blocked more than 20 entire countries that were the source of those headaches.

The site lost 20 to 30 very active quality members that were from those countries, but they also eliminated more than 200 active members who were dumping the majority of the junk content. Sometimes the action of a majority of countrymen ruin opportunities for themselves and their own friends and families. As a site owner or moderator, you sometimes have to do what you have to do.

The reason that site ended was that they refused to create a mobile version and google delisted the entire site and all content specifically for that reason. Even owners of great sites don't always choose the right path.

PC users are the dying Kind, there is a reason why Tiktok had beaten Youtube for Views because the zoomers prefers phones and the lower class people cannot afford pc.

Your website, your rules. Blocking the whole country will help a bit, but it's not enough to stop those infamous posters. If they are determined, they could be back using Vpn, and all the other good posters will have to suffer.

I agree, there are both good and bad people in every country; blocking a country will also block those people, who support right decision, rest might find to hit back again.

Well, I understand the view point of getting more spams from a country or region. but I think it will be unfair to block out an entire country because of few bad people. The best bet will be to block their own ISP and that will suffice to avoid punishing everyone for their misdeeds.

You can't blame everyone in a country actually because people are good and bad everywhere so it is about making sure you don't miss out on genuine traffic

That won't be fair since you can't just generalize people like that. I just prefer that you just block that person instead of everyone, I don't think that is right. Also I think those spammers can move to another country and do the same if they like doing that and if they earn alot from doing that.
