Categories and Forums

Postby shamzblueworld » 14 Sep 2013, 04:17

I'm going to launch a webmaster discussions forum, not a promotional niche, just discussions, resources and help etc. Want to know you guy's opinion about categories and forums for it, what are the required ones at the start? And how many at the begining?

You should have topics about business, websites advertisements, article section, current affairs section, personal interests section in which everyone can write their views about them.

Well I'm not sure starting a new webmaster forum is a good idea. It's such an over-saturated niche even some of the best forum owners can get them off their feet. If I was you I'd focus on a micro niche within the webmaster niche.

I am also on the process of starting a forum for a particular niche or community. Let's see how it goes. I need some spam protection though.

Start with a few and grow as the forum and the content supports it. Empty forums is unattractive and makes your forum look like its inactive. If you are able to provide the content for the category, then go for it; otherwise only have a few categories and add more and move threads when the time comes.

Personally I feel, you should never have more than 10 forums in any category. Overall, your forum should have less than 20 categories. Just my opinion.

It looks good but I would prefer a new more professional theme and another domain.

Yes I would also prefer that, I wish I could buy a premium theme, because free ones of MyBB aren't that good at all, and I will get a TLD for it pretty soon as well.

You could buy a premium themes but you will need to make it a pay per post forum to get members to the forum at the start. This is the only way you will get more posts that will enable you to monetize it.

In my opinion, Suggestions, help, tutorials, are important in a webmaster forum. Suggestions is for people to post their websites and ask for suggestions to improve their site, whether in terms of design, posts, or even extensions. The category tutorial is for users to share their knowledge in website management, coding or something else. Help is for people to ask for help when they are facing a catastrophic problem or some formatting problems that make people scratch their heads finding solutions, they could ask for help from here to fix their problems when they really reached the end of the road or require some other helps. These are just suggestions so forgive me if I posted something wrong and please let me know if so.

I agree. We need to add tutorials. I am checking in this site if we have there, or at least someone wants to post tutorials. I am always searching for tutorials in Google because it is a big help to me , if you will add this , your forums will be searchable for sure.

The only category that I can think of for a forum discussion is the earnings site. That's the most popular for writers now and habitues of forums would always flock to boards with those topics. Plain and simple, people are attracted by money.

I agree, but on some forums that serve another purpose, such as anime forums and photography forums it might not be suitable. Money has become a part of our life since long time ago. Its impressive when the time people uses seashells to trade, I can imagine the ocean's seashells are hard to find. However, I am more interested in how people's trade in the future.
