The last time I researched the average life of a website, I found that the average website only lasted about 7 years without a major update due to technology changes.
This time, I found the following quote:
2 years 7 months
The average website lifespan is 2 years 7 months. Actually it was 2.66 years which is 2 years, 6 months and 27 days, but close enough.
The number one reason older websites fail is how technology changes affect your search engine results. Older sites tend to drop out of top search engine results. You don't show up in search engine results you no longer have visitors and the site dies because it is no longer relevant.
I also found several useful sites that explain why you need updates and what to look for when making needed changes.
Hope some of these links can help you find what you need to stay current.
