I'm not sure exactly how backlinks work, but I do believe you have explained it in an easy to understand manner. When I first started my blog, I'd go through the articles I'd taken from elsewhere and get rid of backlinks, but not anymore! I always credit the source and leave in the links that come with the article. I read somewhere that it also helps your site's credibility.

backlinks will work only when they pass link juice. Only do-follow backlinks pass link juice.
