Some MyBB Stop-Spammer Plugin?

Postby jacktheking » 18 Sep 2013, 10:01

Today when I checked my MyBB Forums, there were full of spam posts. I have dealt with them according. First I have banned their account forever and blocked their IP form registration. Next I noted that all of them used the same email hosting; therefore I blocked the email hosting site too. I have listed some stop-spammer plugins and ready to install them tomorrow.

    No Proxy Please v0.2
    Registration Security Question
Checkbox Validation - Dont know if it work for MyBB 1.6.10

Do you guys have any other stop-spammer plugins? Mind sharing it with me?
Sorry, but I dont want to have Stop-Forum-Spam.

SFS is really not great. They block too many emails and IP's from people who are actually legit, friendly members.

When you have StopForumSpam on your forum you can adjust the settings. When you install it you shouldn't just leave it as it is, you really should look at the options available in the settings and set them in the most appropriate way for your forum.

One thing that Fowler always recommends for them, is that you change the settings so that it does NOT block registrations based on username as leaving that setting on, can result in a lot of false positives.

Alot of scripts that use SFS block on usernames. There is a chance of multiple users using the same IP so that is the second option that can cause some false positives but emails are pretty unique to individuals so if anything, blocking just on emails should create barely any false positives. There is also the option to taking into account the last seen date, number of times seen or the confidence score although many scripts do not make use of these. Plugin authors and people running forums on default settings that quite often include usernames checks are the main reason people seem to think SFS causes alot of false positives.

You will only ever need two anti-spam plugins for MyBB. I will list them below.

Registration Security Question
A great plugin which stops a lot of bots from signing up. A common mistake people make is using questions which are easy enough for anyone or a bot to answer. Never use these, but use questions related to your board. Most of the time the bot/spammer haven't got any knowledge of your board and it usually stops them in their tracks.

Stop Forum Spam - For MyBB
One of the best and easiest to configure. I'd recommend activating email checks (which is on the MyBB plugin). This stops many, as Fowler said, emails are usually unique to individuals. Not that it's needed, but if you have email verification enabled and they used a false email address or one that isn't theirs, they won't be able to activate their account (which stops them posting).

Another optional plugin is Spamalyser. Once installed, you do not need to change any settings. This plugin checks new posts and uses a link weight system. In the ACP, there are certain words that you can blacklist so the more times a user enters this word in their post, the more weight their post gets. If the post gets over the weight specified in the ACP, the post is sent to the moderation queue, for you to approve or delete. It also lets you add links which are safe from the checks.

It can be annoying though as this plugin can stop normal members who trigger the plugin into blocking them posting. For that reason, I'd use the first two plugins I mentioned.

I agree here, simple security questions really made a difference on my forum. I was receiving numerous spam bots and it (mostly) stopped as soon as that plugin was installed.

It is better if you have those anti-spam plugins the day you start your forums. If you take the same path as me.. you forums will be ruins..

My forum is currently hosted on Mybb and I am sick and tired of the spammers. They have been registering daily on my forum and making my life tougher.
