SFS is really not great. They block too many emails and IP's from people who are actually legit, friendly members.

Registration Security Question
A great plugin which stops a lot of bots from signing up. A common mistake people make is using questions which are easy enough for anyone or a bot to answer. Never use these, but use questions related to your board. Most of the time the bot/spammer haven't got any knowledge of your board and it usually stops them in their tracks.
Stop Forum Spam - For MyBB
One of the best and easiest to configure. I'd recommend activating email checks (which is on the MyBB plugin). This stops many, as Fowler said, emails are usually unique to individuals. Not that it's needed, but if you have email verification enabled and they used a false email address or one that isn't theirs, they won't be able to activate their account (which stops them posting).
Another optional plugin is Spamalyser. Once installed, you do not need to change any settings. This plugin checks new posts and uses a link weight system. In the ACP, there are certain words that you can blacklist so the more times a user enters this word in their post, the more weight their post gets. If the post gets over the weight specified in the ACP, the post is sent to the moderation queue, for you to approve or delete. It also lets you add links which are safe from the checks.
It can be annoying though as this plugin can stop normal members who trigger the plugin into blocking them posting. For that reason, I'd use the first two plugins I mentioned.

It is better if you have those anti-spam plugins the day you start your forums. If you take the same path as me.. you forums will be ruins..
